Has anyone who's received the OTA update or installed a 4.0.4 custom rom experiencing issues as reported by mobilesyrup last week?

Galaxy Nexus users reporting signal drops after upgrade to Android 4.0.4

Another Android storm is brewing, and this time it is over reported signal drops on the GSM Galaxy Nexus after upgrading to Android 4.0.4. The problem was first reported in late March as users either received an OTA update directly from Google/Samsung, or by loading a custom ROM with the new AOSP build. The issue has been generally isolated to 4.0.4 though some users have said the issue is present on 4.0.3.

According to an XDA member, this the way to attempt to recreate it: “The issue as described is very easy to replicate – turn off wifi and then turn off the screen. Wait 5 minutes and try to call your phone – it will not work if you have this issue. When you power the screen back on you may see that you have signal, this looks to be just a cached image, after a second of so you will notice an “x” in the signal bar.”

The behaviour seems to be occurring only when the screen is turned off: once turned on, the Galaxy Nexus baseband will reach out again to the network and obtain a 3G signal. However for many users it is preventing them from receiving calls, notifications and text messages when idle in a pocket or on the table. It seems that the baseband is dropping a signal at certain CPU speeds: anything under 700Mhz is low enough to cause a break. And because of the way the Android kernel optimizes battery, by dropping CPU speeds based on predetermined governor to around 350Mhz when the screen is off, this is causing the problem. Rooted users who engage a performance modification app such as SetCPU are finding the problem abating when manually setting their minimum CPU speed to 700Mhz.

The problem is not universal, either: there are many users commenting in the threads peppered around XDA, RootzWiki or Google’s own Android Support site saying there is no issue, and are finding it impossible to recreate it. It hasn’t been isolated to a signal kernel (it’s present on stock and custom ROMs with modified kernels) nor a specific radio build (though Google recommends I9250XXKK6/7 for any user running Android 4.0.3 or 4.0.4).

A Google employee has acknowledged the problem in the Android Issue Tracker forum, and is asking users who are experiencing it to send in log files for reference. Unfortunately for users running stock Android 4.0.4, the only way to alleviate the issue is to either root your phone and change the minimum CPU speed, or to downgrade back to 4.0.1 or 4.0.2, each of which had problems of their own.

Are you experiencing this signal loss bug? If so, have you been able to solve it? Let us know.

Specifically what is happening with my gNex is if my phone goes to sleep (screen turns off), later on when I go to unlock my phone, I cannot use WIND data. I see the bars at the top right corner, but instead of them being blue, they are grey. The only way I am able to get data back is if I put my phone in airplane mode for a minute than switch back (and even sometimes that is not enough as I would then have to reboot). Its getting VERY ANNOYING!

I am on an AOKP rom. Build 25 which was representative of 4.0.3 was working perfectly fine. I then upgraded to build 29 early last week (which brought me to 4.0.4) and have been having the issue ever since. Yesterday upgraded to the latest 31 build, and the issue persist.

I'm probably going to go back to build 25, but wanted to first see if other WIND/RFDs users are also experiencing the same issue?

yep has happened to me a few times on telus..but the data connections just disappears.. a reboot fixes it though..
i'm on akop 29 right now

just restore back to 4.0.2 or keep OC your processor to not allow it to go to sleep

Happens to me as well. I've seen it when I'm on wifi and then I turn off Wifi. I'm on 4.0.4 AKOP build 29 as well. Rogers.

It's not a big issue for me as i reconnect my data within 5 seconds. sometimes i turn airplane mode on and off and it goes back.
I wish AKOP can build an updated app, it would be kind of cool.

Does this mean reflash rom and lose all your sms messages, re-install apps and your settings?

too lazy to back up everything.

It's a fix that you flash over it it's always good to backup when flashing but you don't need to. What I did was download the patch, back up my from in recovery, wipe dalvik, then flash the fix then all was fixed.

Restorations are quite easy.

Use this for sms:

Use this for call logs:

If you previously allowed Google to back up and restore your settings, you should have no problem. This only works for apps installed on that specific phone. I did a clean wipe and it reinstalled all my apps. As for SMS, I have them synced to Google. For pics, backed them up already.

Galaxy Nexus users getting OTA update to fix screen-off signal problems
http://mobilesyrup.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/gnexupgrade.png

Earlier this month we reported (http://mobilesyrup.com/2012/04/06/galaxy-nexus-users-reporting-signal-drops-after-upgrade-to-android-4-0-4/) that some Galaxy Nexus users were experiencing connectivity issues when their screens were off. This was nailed down to a technique that Google and Samsung incorrectly employed in the latest kernel, causing voltages to occasionally drop below a threshold value, disconnecting the radio in the process. Turning the screen back on would reinstate a connection to the carrier, but that was cold comfort for thousands of people who weren’t receiving notifications, calls and texts with the phone in their pockets.

Google has updated Android 4.0.4 to build IMM76I, changing nothing but the default kernel that comes with the ROM. We’ve been getting scattered reports that Canadians are receiving the update, which will likely be reported by Google in the next few days. If you’ve had the update come through, please let us know how your phone is faring.
