Going to Chicago and Washington. Need input on areas to stay in or hotels. I have no clue about either city in terms of the places to stay. I'm mostly looking for museums and whatnot, things like that.

In Chicago stay in the Loop. Trains can take you anywhere and the museum campus is close. Walking distance to most Chicago attractions.

Friendship Heights (MD I think) is a safe, swanky neighbourhood close to DC. We stayed at the Embassy Suites there and were pleased... nice hotel and excellent subway access to get to the Mall.

North of the river is more expensive...take a water taxi to explore the architecture from the river - they're very convenient. As previous post states, most attractions and shopping (Slate St and Magnificent Mile) are within the Loop for easy walking but bus and train/subway are quite convenient.
