View Full Version : HTC One X, now what?

Anyone wondering about the topic... it is just something I started way back on my first HTC device, the nexus one!
Well, I was pretty set on waiting for the rogers device...... based on some of the benchmarks I had read. Then Saturday, I ordered the quad core... I figure I can always flip it if necessary. With my new job and hobby... I been pretty busy lately, but this device and the sgs3 has got me back in the upgrade mood.... as usual, if you have any questions or requests... let me know. As for performance, specs etc.... it is well documented all over the web. All I can say for now is the speaker is pretty deadly, music using my beats headphones is great as well. I have always liked htc/sense as well... but overall, this phone is a beast. Zero shutter, zero lag, pictures while taking video.... I am enjoying it all. Heck, if the sgs3 is not 1080p, I might pass it by...I may look into rooting, roms later tonight... but for now, I am just going to play with it! Aside from loving the speaker, design, sound, display... the notification light is nice also. I liked the smaller, less hassle packaging as well.

Yay another Kakarot thread :)
If you can post some snaps with the phone, and maybe a video test that will be great. Also some battery results and such. PS, how are you managing with the phone not having expandable memory and with it not having a non removable battery as well?
Usually, I transfer music to my sd card or pics and then put it in my phone. I even install apps on it too.
Keep us posted :)

Ok, I have no complaints about the camera/video... but I do want to do this hack tonight http://www.redmondpie.com/improve-the-camera-video-quality-on-your-htc-one-x-with-this-mod-how-to/
know idea why they would hamper a camera, but it seems they did... it is dark out now, so I will post a couple of quick photos/video for you... as a sample. As for the memory, it is a 32gb... more then I will ever need. As for the battery, I only ever bought 2 android device batteries (desire hd and.... and.... hmmm, maybe just the one) and even then, I swapped it out twice. Another non issue for me personally. The phone arrived with a 60% charge, I been playing with it for a few hours and setting it up with accounts, apps etc... and it was down to 20%... I need more time for real world performance and a full charge/discharge. The usual suspect is the screen ;)
give me a second to post a quick photo or 2 and a boring video ;)

Sure. But wait, didn't you have Galaxy Nexus, and other Android devices that had removable batteries as well? I guess there's a different method for hard reset or a workaround to compare with a "battery pull" so to speak?
Ya I am debating on getting one for dirt cheap, but broken digitizer/glass. Think its worth it?

I am betting if nothing else, samsung GS3 will best the One X in battery department. Just like GS2 bested the other 2011 HTC phones.
It is a nice phone but putting 1800 mah for a 4.7 inch screen really isn't going to cut it for more than 2-3 hours of screen time.
Even my captivate gave me upto 4 hours screen easily (4 inch screen) compared to my friend's desire (3.7 inch screen).

Well I used it for 3 solid hours and went from 60~20%... Never being charged.... I guess I just don't use my phones enough these days.... As I don't need battery backups/charges.... It's typical smartphone/android life with the extra horsepower/screen/New toy playing. I fear/assume the S4 version will be harder on juice.... tomorrow will be my first day of a full charge, and I will post the results... but like I said, more horsepower, larger screen... it will be "par" for the course. Battery technology has to change, but overall... I know I will get a full day out of it, because I got a full day out of all my devices.
But give me a few days to get a full charge/discharge. As for battery pulls, I cannot recall the last time I had to do one of these.... but you can hard/soft reset any device ;)
Like any current phone, it is not perfect... but it keeps getting closer and closer. I am off 4 out of the next 5 days.... I will update accordingly. The one mental note I have made so far, is today I had some interesting phone interference/sound quality.... be nice to see if it was a network issue/device etc..

I think the S4 should be an improvement because it will be 25nm versus the 40nm tegra right? Or what they say lol.
I like every thing about that phone. It's like the perfect phone except for the battery life which in xda is reported to range from 2-3 hours max (screen use). Judging from my 2 hours total commute use plus calling during day and updates and such, i believe it will need charging by 1-2pm. While android is a bit resource intensive the few other phones i have used have been actually pretty resilient and with the RAZR MAXX motorola showed you can actually place a huge battery in a 9mm shell and get amazing battery life.
I have read though that some of the custom ROMs are adding 20-30% battery life by activating companion core. That would be great news if confirmed!

I just fear with the extra performance/working harder... it will be a bit worse... but I also think it can and will be the better of the 2 devices... that is why I held off so long (lol)... but I gave in, because I was bored and I read some good reviews on how each device does certain things better... again, my experience and usage is limited to today, because I was going to wait for the rogers version.... but I will have some real number values sooner then later. Then again, each persons usage/demands are different. All I can tell you guys so far, it is very android/normal... and considering the hardware, that is good. Like I said above, some tests are well documented on the net... and in favor of my opinion.... I seem to always be playing with my phones one way or another... and they always last me the day. Hands on use, doing the same thing always, all phones are comparable...
I like the device, but I hope the sgs3 and iphone 5 bring something better to the table.... but the battery and storage is really a none issue for me. I cannot recall the last time I did a battery swap/pull... and I never bought an sd card....

haha glad to hear your thoughts. Yeah i hope the gs3 still brings a removable battery because i can just carry a spare and change it in 5 seconds and done. The non-removable battery means carrying around charging equipment instead of just a slim battery in my wallet :P

well, you are talking about .5"... so there is no difference, for the most part I been one handing it all day :P
I like the design, feel and look of the phone... however, I would love a case and scree protector.... the camera is really out there for dings and such :/
As for colors, brightness and use.... seems as smooth as butter so far. It really is a sweet spot, for me. I think anything under 5" is acceptable, but I also enjoyed the note... (surprisingly).

I think if I don't get the One X, I'll get the One S (S4 just like the One X with Rogers), minus smaller screen - 4.3" which I don't mind and slightly weaker battery, but its doable. Too bad there's no extended for it :(.

Had to google that, because I never use it
" Good examples are the changes HTC made to the software's native browser. For example, swiping downwards across the bottom of the One X's bezel brings up a useful mini menu granting you access to tabs, bookmarks and saved web articles. While not groundbreaking the menu is a nice touch.
However, the One X software's best addition remains Google's Chrome web browser.
Available free via the Google Play store, the browser is only available on ICS and is one of the best ways to surf the internet on any mobile device, offering unlimited tab browsing with a pleasing, intuitive card style interface."
Built in browser is great, I could try it..but since I never used it on the nexus, I can't compare....

Really wish the Robbers version was 32GB. But just having 16GB is paltry when you have a so called HD res on a screen like that.

Except the One X screen is the much better one, 720p non-pentile IPS SLCD2. One S has the 960 x 540 plus pentile Super AMOLED.
But that may also mean those amazing battery stats. It's a bit of a trade - off but the RAZR with a similar screen looked fine to me so this should be good too :)

To be honest, I think for the One X, the 1800/1850mah might be somewhat insufficient for a quad core phone. For the S4, yes it might be just right. Again, it depends on how one uses the phone and such. Hence why it would have been nice to get a removable battery and slap in extended in.
As for the One S, 1650mah again might be insufficient, but who knows. Only time will tell when battery tests have been done and such.
PS if you have the European version, there's an update rolling out: http://www.androidcentral.com/software-update-128-now-rolling-out-euro-htc-one-x

I wouldn't be too worried about battery life if it had a removable battery. They shouldn't go the non-removable route unless they can claim amazing battery life IMO.

It is like anything in life I suppose.... to me, I never need a back up battery and even when I had one, I used it a total of 2 times... I guess if I really needed it, I could get an external battery charger... but if I did not need one yet, why start now :)
However, having more options makes for a better device (memory, battery etc). I was happy to see the micro sim though!
So far I been playing with it since 730am, few texts, emails, facebook, calls, surging, teeter. 65%
I have not tried any hd movies yet... but music sounds good. Nothing weird as of yet, smooth going. Screen is big and beautiful.

I am curious to see how nice the screen really is. From the video it looks slightly too warm and yellow to me like the new iPad. I prefer the much cooler screens like the iPad 2 screen or the AMOLED.
Also, the thing is WIDE, according to the demo unit at least. It makes the Gnex look slender. I think we found the absolute maximum for a phone that isn't a phablet. 4.65. Let's hope the S3 doesn't go over that.

Definitely not me. Weak web browsing, no microsd, and so-so battery life. I'll pass.
I really love the whole look of the phone and HTC sense. It's just unfortunate that it isn't living up to what I expected. I'd rather get a Galaxy NOTE right now.
Won't the GNote be too big to make calls and such? I tried the demo unit at Bell, and I felt it was too big against my face. Sure it will be nice if one paired a BT headset to it.

I think personally, I'll hold off on this device too. I might consider the SGS III (based on the leaked video/pics released today) it seems feasible enough. If not, then I'd consider getting the SGS II HD LTE.

Ah. Enjoy. Query, the batteries for both the Tegra 3 and S4 are 1800mah right? Is that sufficient for quad core at least?
@ amace, it will be also nice if you can do some battery tests based on what you use your phone for mostly.
That being said, on an off topic note, I found this article on Android Central, that HTC is considering making extended batteries for the One X and One S.

For sure.
I'll run some tests and give a bit of a review with how I find it.
I'm hoping the battery works well. I don't live in an LTE area, but I'll be in Toronto in a few weeks, interested to see how that goes.

I dont know how much of a difference the. 5 inch makes but some phones are too wide. Like the GS2 is a little fat but since it is only 4.3 it's okay. The Xperia arc and S are 4.3 too but their screens are taller rather than wider. So they are more slender despite having the same screen size.
The one x seems to be on the wide end of 4.7 cause the galaxy nexus looks skinny next to it. It might be because one is dark grey and the other white though.
Anyways, if anyone in the GVR area wants to look at it, they have a display model at the best buy across the street from metrotown. The screen has two burn in spots though but I doubt that is all that common.

What kind of burn in spots? Are they yellow? If so, it's a VERY common issue of One X screen; same problem found on Xperia S since they both use the same panel. Sony said that they've found the issue and already fixed the manufacturing process but there are already thousands of One X shipped with defected panel. What's worse is that those yellow spots tend to show up when the device heats up, so sometimes it's not that easy to spot a defected screen. Hopefully this batch that Rogers is selling don't have this kind of problem.......

These ones are nothing like the yellow tint issue on the Xperia S. The spots on that One X unit is definitely a manufacture defect. Like two huge rust spots. Not the same and for sure not wide spread. The Xperia S problem is not really noticeable. These are blatant dark spots and that handset is clearly a rare lemon. I guarantee you that 99% of the handsets won't have spots like that display model. Lol
I doubt they use the same panel since both screens are quite different. The Xperia S is 4.3 inches while the One X is 4.7. The Xperia S also doesn't use gorilla glass. The HTC One X also has better viewing angles and is an IPS display while the Xperia S is a normal LCD non IPS display.
That said, videos look better on the Xperia S it seems and you can set the Xperia S a bit brighter.

ya..sorry, you are right, not the same panel, but it's rumoured that some of the panels are provided by Sony; although different display technologies, they both suffer from Sony's manufacturing problem. Besides, there seem to be different types of panel found on One X, one with yellow tint and better viewing angle, one with natural white colour but not so great viewing angle and not as bright...
There are just too way many yellow spot reports out there and it's almost like a gamble to buy an One X....

Yeah it's best to wait for sure. Even if you decide to go with the One X, it's still best to do your due diligence and at least see a video on the GS3 which is being announced in less than 2 weeks. Then if you decide that you prefer the One X, then these manufacturing niggles and kinks should be worked out by then.
The new iPad and iPhone 4/4s also had different temperature screens. Some were yellowish and some had cool blue screens. Plus some bs about the glue not evaporating in time. Haha

Read that, good thing I don't do a lot of web browsing. Very mildly, just visit Mobile Syrup, RFD and one or two sites. Otherwise, have apps for most of the stuff like CNN, National Post, Globe & Mail, etc.
I wonder how it is for gaming, too bad they didn't do that test.
I am pretty sure the UK version wins in the graphics dept... while the rogers in the cpu... In my mind, quad core is the way to go for that reason and for the extra size.... I got a day and half out of my first full charge.

I considered it, because the s4 is a beast.... but like I said about, if I bought it and then unlocked it... the price difference was $30.... so for $30, I got a factory unlocked, 32gb, better graphics/game section device.... I compared the 2 side by side for the last few nights (limited hands on time). The quad was better for me performance wise and battery wise. I returned the rogers for a full refund.

I thought the note was 2 large as well, it is why I held off so long... but once I had it, I loved browsing, gaming, movies on it.... it still felt awkward in public. However, a lot of people were interested in it and asked me about it. If size is an issue, overall... it was very doable for me... and once it has ICS, I think it will be a force (assuming you are ok with the size)

announced yes, available... who knows... all I do know is, the battery on the quad is very impressive for the screen/specs.... I played with both devices and returned the rogers one. There is not stutter/lag in the quad and the battery life is better.. combined with the larger storage and factory unlocked.... it was a given for me.... both are great devices, but I seen "less" from the rogers device.... even though I thought it would be the opposite.
Once we have the quad core s4, and if the camera is 12mp/great as rumored.... I will probably make the jump... as long as the battery is android average/comparable!! 1080p would be a nice touch :P
I like the look of the htc, I like the feel, I like the ICS/Sense.... I like the sound, function/wifi/data..... so far, so good! I can honestly recommend this phone to anyone :)

Holding off on the One X for two reasons as mentioned, plus don't like the Tegra 3 Quad Core. Looking forward to what Samsung has to offer with their Exynos quad core. If the specs seem decent for the SGS III or whatever they call it, will make the plunge. Otherwise, I might consider the One X, if not the One V. obviously the s4 quad/dual core is a beast... heck, the s3 was amazing.... and the s4 is way better for power and performance... but that will also be an $800 phone, but yea.... odds are, I will have that as well... unless they drop the ball huge (which I cannot see). I liked all of my last 4 samsung devices.. or more, I lose count. However, there has to be something to make me jump (be it camera, battery) If all things were comparable... I may hold off, but that is very unlikely... Samsung seems to be on to something.

I am also on the fence because of battery life. For moderate use I am sure this can last a day easily, but for an hour long read on the commute for example it might drop a lot which is what I am really worried about. That's why I am going for the one s except it is just 16gb and with a screen that is not as envious as the one x.
But if the battery was replaceable, I would have just bought a spare and I wouldn't care at all. Now I need to carry a charging cable. Still, I live in a city so I guess some bump charging during the day might be the next thing I will need to get used to. I am not too interested in the Samsung because sense looks so nice. Comparing the international version and the Rogers version:
Weight: 130 g vs 146 g
Dimensions: 134.4 x 69.9 x 8.9 mm (international) vs 134.8 x 69.9 x 9.27 mm (Rogers)
Internal memory: 32 Gb, usable around 25 Gb vs. 16 Gb for Rogers
Most importantly, Nvidia Tegra 3 quad core 1.5 GHz vs. Qualcomm MSM8260A Snapdragon Dual-core 1.5 GHz Krait for Rogers.
Plus paying data plan + $170 up front + 3 years commitment + Rogers bloatware (MyAccount, urMusic,Rogers Live, Rogers App Store)

well, I ordered 2 from handtec so far... grand total is approx $755 after taxes, shipping, conversion.. maybe a bit less. If I bought the rogers one I reserved, it would of been $700 after taxes, $20 to unlock... and still 16gb/dualcore. The s3 will be a bit more expensive, but possibly... a bit better as you mentioned above. I will just flip this phone, once it comes out... you lose a few bucks in that process... but you also play/use with them all.

It all depends which SGS3 you get. You can get the international SGS3 with the Exynos processor or the LTE version with S4 processor. Even if comparing the LTE S4 HTC One vs SGS3 S4, you've got different UIs (Sense vs TouchWiz), different screens (LCD vs SAMOLED), different features (unibody case vs removable back and battery). Expandable storage in one and not the other. Extra features such as picture taking/eye tracking. Lots to compare aside from processor and GPU alone
