View Full Version : Jailbreaking 5.1

I currently have an iPhone 4 running iOS 5.1 that has never been jailbroken.

I want to run an untethered jailbreak, but the latest version only supports 5.0.1

When doing research about downgrading, there was a requirement of having one's SHSH blobs in order to downgrade; however, because I have never jailbroken before, does this still apply to me?

I have scoured google and comments for the past 2-3 hours and it seems like all the relevant info applies to those who were previously jailbroken (at least I think?), as opposed to someone like myself who is on 5.1 and never jb'd.

Shsh blobs are only useful if you saved at 5.01 then upgraded to 5.1, but decided to go back to 5.01. Since yours originally came with 5.1, it won't apply to you.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

My phone originally came with iOS 4 when I purchased this when it came out, and it has never been jailbroken in the almost 2 years I've had it. I want to go back to 5.0.1 in order to get the untethered jailbreak, but are the SHSH blobs necessary for someone who has never been jailbroken before?

Yes. You cannot downgrade without them.

You cannot downgrade to 5.0.1.

Here is how it works so far: suppose your phone was at 5.0.1. You jailbroke for the first time ever OR, you had jailbroken before and chose "yes" when cydia asked to back up your SHSH blobs (if first time jailbreak) or it simply had the SHSH backed up because of previous jailbreaks. Now when you go to 5.1, you can downgrade to 5.0.1 using those blobs.

But if you are at 5.1 and never jailbroke, you cannot downgrade. As a simple rule, iOS versions lower than the current version on which the phone is jailbroken the first time ever cannot be re-installed, only higher.

Guess you came into the game late.. the tethered jb is not that bad.. since they have semi-tether... I honestly only had to reset my phone once or twice during the tether times when I was away from the computer...

google is all over the place....

what does someone with a 4s and 5.1 use right now to jailbreak? answer: nothing yet.
who is working on the tool for jailbreaking 5.1? i.e. who should i be following?

Just bookmark iclarified.com. They update their website as soon as a new jailbreak or unlock method is out for the various iPhone models. Their simple jailbreak/unlock tutorial is one of the best i would say.

No longer have to follow a gazillion sites.

Ya and I've seen the videos of those who reboot while semi'd. All the functions are still there besides cydia stuff. It seems like there's not much to lose, but I'm still hesitant. I appreciate the iPhone for being stable for almost 2 years and never really glitching. And I'm worried about putting all this jailbreak stuff and having the phone be more unstable, as some users have experienced (respring loop, lag, etc.).

follow pod2g and musclenerd (twitter) and check iphone dev website for updates

FYI - shsh keys don't work on a5 (iphone4s and ipad2 and up) devices anymore

there is a new AP ticket system, where the shsh keys are stiched to the firmware.. ios 5.0.1 for iphone 4 was the last to support this.

I find the jb info confusing...

1) Signing window is something new to me, I thought it's only shsh thats needed. Need to read up more on that.

2) for a5 chips, Absinthe does have untethered jb, but dev-team says There is no untethered jb

All the features you need are in redsn0w. Signing has been around for a while, the stitching processd is new (only needed for a4)

Absinthe only does 5.0.1 and 5.0....

There is a tethered jb for older devices

Pretty much only thing you need to know is 4s, iPad 2 and iPad 3 have nothing available for 5.1

Everything older is doable in some way
