Ok Guys, need a bit of help brainstorming ideas for a 1-week vacation

May 19-26.

We're in Toronto now, and we'd be willing to fly pretty much anywhere on a reasonably priced flight.

Objective: mini-getaway from a very hectic time in our life due to work.

We've been to San Francisco and loved it - spent 6 days there just hanging out and checking out the different attractions, walked around a ton, but still took it easy.

We're looking for a similar type of vacation - but are stumped for ideas.

Important to us:

- some culture
- great food
- no all-inclusives
- not the party/clubbing types
- must be safe, clean hotels (nothing fancy)

Some ideas off the top of my head -

1> Fly to Barcelona and hang there for a week, take a day-trip to the Pyranees mountains. But this is a bit pricey for a 1-week getaway. More suited if combined with another week in France due to flight costs.

2> NYC - spend 3-4 days in the city, check out some museums, central park, try a bunch of restaurants, etc. shopping.

Any other suggestions?

Chicago

- some culture
the architecture is incredible, lots of things to see and do. A cubs game/chicago bulls playoff game, oak beach, lincoln park zoo which is free = everything Toronto should be.

- great food
To name a few delicacies, chicago style deep dished pizza, chicago style hot dogs.
To name a few restaurants I enjoyed very much: The Purple Pig (http://www.yelp.ca/biz/the-purple-pig-chicago), The Girl and the Goat (http://www.yelp.ca/biz/girl-and-the-goat-chicago), Hot Dougs (http://www.yelp.ca/biz/hot-dougs-chicago), Smoque (http://www.yelp.ca/biz/smoque-bbq-chicago)

- no all-inclusives
Not cheap either but I booked my hotel through Priceline and landed a very nice 4 star for under 90 a night.

- not the party/clubbing types
As stated earlier lots of things to do, field museum, shopping on michigan ave., the beaches, navy pier, boat cruises ..

Avoid Pizzaria UNO, it was thick with lost of toppings but not that great tasting.

We did New York City, then went to The Hamptons for a few days, it is beautiful there. Check out Southampton then Easthampton and Montauk if you have time. It can be pricey, but you are a RFD'r so there are plenty of opportunities to find something inexpensive.

Austin Texas is supposed to be amazing as is Nashville.

Other option is to find a cheap fligh to a caribbean Island like St. Thomas or St.Martin. They are both breathtaking and have tons of reasonably priced bars and restaurants. Very laid back and relaxing. Most other Islands are pretty expensive.

I love Chicago too, but it feels earily like Toronto.

If you've never been to NY, i highly recommend that. So many famous places to see and things to do. Perfect for a 1 week vacation. As one poster said, they also have some great areas nearby you can drive or take the train to. I have some relatives that live on Long Island and there are some beautiful beaches there.

If you do decide on NY, get the CityPass as you'll save a bundle AND skip lots of lineups to places you're going to end up going anyways. http://www.citypass.com/new-york

What is your budget? I have pricelined Hilton on Michigan Ave which is looking out onto Millenium Park for $100/night before. I had also sent my parents to Chicago and got them a 3.5* just off of Michigan Ave for $85/night. Then again, you may want to check out airbnb.com
