I am utterly amazed this company is still in business anywhere in Canada, particularly since their outrageous policies and sales tactics were exposed on CBC Marketplace back in 2009.

Watching the news and laughing my butt off. It was only yesterday we found a paper thing in our mailbox from DirectBuy about some free vacation or someother.
This place has had issues for ages. As the other poster mentioned, CBC exposed its issues years ago.

I got a lot of items at great prices, that being said Home Depot had better prices on some appliances for Boxing Day.
So its not a scam at all.

I wouldn't label it a scam but I remember using a buddy's login for the club after he signed up and The BBQ i wanted would cost more with the shipping and a Taylormade R7 club was $100 more at direct buy than at golftown at the time.
There are some deals but not $5000 worth unless you spend a lot all the time.
I originally wanted to sign up and was going to meet up alone, they told me I couldn't attend unless my wife came. They kept calling to set up an appt and I kept saying i'll only come alone, my wife was too busy, they told me that they didn't want me then as a memebr and hung up.
So long Direct Buy and Good Bye!

Been a DB member here in Ottawa for a few years - joined just prior to an extensive renovation and I can confirm that the savings are both genunine and extensive, depending on what you're buying. Cabinetry, high end plumbing and lighting fixtures, higher end appliances, flooring, quartz countertops, etc - the deals are unbeatable. Run-of-the-mill stuff carried by a zillion retailers? Nope - the forces of competition drive those deals and sales, promotions, and clearance prices aren't necessarily better than DB's prices but they don't require an expensive membership.
In short, if you're doing a renovation or major redecorating and DB lists the manufacturers you favour, then a membership makes sense. If you're planning to spend $25-50k on major purchases within the next 3 years, you'll get your membership back and then some - even compared with the best deals you could negotiate elsewhere. If not, then membership isn't for you. Sadly, many DB clubs push memberships to people who really cannot benefit from them - and, to do so, they employ a stupid, cards-hidden presentation that has the feel of a sleazy high pressure timeshare come-on.
Will we extend our membership beyond its current term? Doubtful - unless we're planning another large renovation (and we aren't).

Hi pinkcar, I'm looking to get a granite countertop too, for my cousin's new house. Do you have the local vendor list? If you want, you can also reply by PM. Thanks!
