My old canon printer gave up the ghost.
I need a printer that has cheap ongoing costs such as cheap ink or cheap replacement ink.
Any suggestions.

Laser printers are generally much cheaper per page to operate than inkjet. Staples has been having lots of killer deals lately on colour laser printers and multifunctions (I've seen them as low as $59 in the past couple of months) so keep the local Staples sale flyers (you can't rely on their website as in-store deals and online deals aren't always the same, and the website is usually sold out of any hot deal within the first few hours while the stores still have stock.)

You'll usually get around 1000 pages out of the starter toner cartridges that come with the printer, and then you can just buy refill toner powders and reset chips on eBay and refill the cartridges yourself (it's easy and cheap.)
