Sorry, but I think you'll hear of either and upgrade of the 7000, or a replacement for the 300s, or that's what I hope:)

Affordable FF finally comes true.....

What do you mean?...
I know we're talking about Nikon here, but i'm talking about the affordable aspect of FF.

A used Canon 5D is only around $800 with plenty of shutter life left.

I had rented a D700 + 24-70 to shoot a wedding and it was amazing considering I've been using my trusty D50 for years...I said the D700 would be my next upgrade, but if the D600 FF is coming out, I might just buy it! especially for 1500

well, i too have a 5D, but we are talking about second hand here. plus Nikon fans never have a low price (even used) FF to use.

Having a D600 will probably drag the used D700 body price down to a affordable range......

Nikonrumors just added more specs.

This camera looks like it will be my next one, finally a cheap full frame.

was going to update with that, but you beat me to it, thanks thou!

that $1500 mark is just ridiculous. it should be a true Canon killer ( i use a 5D1 myself) since the 5D3 is so much more $, and even if they keep the 5d2 in the market for the same price ($1500), it probably won't be a fair comparison, the AF is the first thing, sync speed, dual slot, eye-fi, fps, and most likely better noise performance.....

didn't think the DSLR market will evolve like that, thought the mirrorless is killing the entry level APSC, but this is how Nikon response to keep the DSLR on top, bravo!

Nikon is having trouble supplying D800's, you wont be getting a D600 before the end of the year or maybe next year..
Canon is also coming out with a cheaper FF

:P Put me in that category as well!

There are also persistent rumors of a 36MP A99 at Photokina and a (ding ding) 24MP Sony FF coming up at the end of the year. Considering that this seems to be the pattern for the Sony / Nikon partnership, I'd say these D600 are solid.

If the d600 turns out to have better iq than the 5d3 (which wont surprise me if it does) then bye bye canon

Noise is lower at lower megapix, so ya expect d600 to have less noise. But if you take more noisy 5d3 image and resample it to lower megapixel - you will have cleaner iamge - if comparing same mpx to mpx (somebody did a v.comprehensive test a while back of similar situation)

Colors etc are mainly dependent on lens (but historically Canon has been more picky with RED).

The IQ difference in body isn't a deal breaker in my opinion.

I wouldn't switch if I had 6 grand worth of lenses invested (in another brand that is), but people on the fence of FF will definitely be interested in this new D600. Yes there are a few quirks to the prelim specs of the D600 but I think Nikon is going to test the waters of a hybrid FX / DX Camera. A lot of Nikon users were wondering where the D300s successor was and I think this is it. Nikon is betting that the crop mode on this camera will fill both the void of DX users while allowing a slow transition to FX lenses. If it allows Nikon to sell more pro grade glass, this camera will be quite profitable for them, even if the body isn't as much.

I hope they implement the D800's 1.2x crop mode. It does wonders with many DX lenses like the 35mm 1.8.

There is also a strong rumuor for a while that Nikon will come out with a *kit* 24-70 f/3.5-4.5 at the same time. This lens was rumoured for quite some time (2-3 months).

carry to elaborate on the 1.2x crop mode more? is the 35mm DX that good? or you need a 40mm 1.8?

yeah, if its cheap, i wouldn't mind a slower 24-70 if it come with good IQ, i use prime for low light.

The 35mm works very good with the 1.2x crop factor. Basically, many DX users moving up to FX won't have to invest in the 50mm 1.8G to get nano coating and a good focus motor. Also, the 35 is slightly faster focus and 40mm is a bit wider than 50. For portraits might not be the best FL but still pretty good. Its more a matter of what DX users moving up have.

Some people report that a variety of UWA work pretty good on 1.2 as well.

Basically, doesn't cost much to implement and helps out on a few aspects. It trumps using a DX camera to begin with because you end up with focus points coverage over your entire picture AND you can frame your crop shots quicker knowing what is around your shot, making the best decision on what to frame without having to pan or pull back.

People would think its stupid but a D800 in 1.5 crop has huge advanatges over a D7000. May not be worth 1800$ but the advantages are still there.

A D600 will definitely fit nicely between the D300S/D7000 and the D800. I think that it is actually hurting Nikon by keeping it so quiet. A lot of people are turned off by the D800's higher price tag and megapixel count so Nikon might be able to hold those people by letting them know that there is something for them in the horizon.

Oh god

With the way the D800 and D4 is constantly out of stock I guess I'm going to have to pre-order at every Nikon retailer in this city (and maybe even outside) to get my hands on one during the first month of release

*fingers crossed*

talking about lens, this would be the "cheap" kit lens for the D600:

Reminds me the good old days with the "cheap" film bodies when everything was FX. Now only if Nikon (esp. Nikon Canada) won't screw it up through its pricing strategies... otherwise this will be another win.
