I have a workshop I'm going to at the U of T (Downtown campus) this summer and was wondering about whether it is worth staying at friends in Scarborough or North York or to just stay at the dorm rooms. It's an early morning to late at night thing so based on Google Maps and the useless TTC website, it looks like it is possible to still take the metro and buses at like 11 pm. Except I can't find any routes for the weekends which may put me in a bit of a pickle. Are the sites reliable in that late night bus service is non existent? Or early morning for that matter (Google turned up nothing arriving on campus at 8:30 am on a weekday!!!)? Are the estimated travel times accurate?

The subway runs from 6am until 1:45am ish during the weekdays and on saturday. It's open 9am on sundays. Typically buses run until 1:30am depending on the day. I don't know if this helpful but hopefully it explains something.

If the workshop is taking place during the weekdays, I'm sure you can take the subway/buses before and after the seminar.

Can you give more details like where you live or how far are you away from campus???

I have friends in North York near Seneca Hill Park, in Scarborough near Ellesmere Public School and also near the Scarborough Hospital. My goal would be able to take transit to get to campus around 9 am and depending on the day, be able to leave as late as 11 pm back to their place 7 days a week (so weekend travel should also be possible).

I am not from Toronto so I don't know my way around the area.

Your best bet is bus 95. http://www3.ttc.ca/Routes/95/Westbound.jsp

Take bus 95 westbound to York Mills Station to get on the subway and then stop at whatever subway station that your seminar is taking place. You can always ask TTC workers for directions if you get lost.

I hope this helps.

This is for Scarborough by the way.

North York may be closer depending on where your friends live.

North York may be a better choice. You can take bus 39 westbound and then get off at finch subway station.

You will have no problem if you are commuting out of North York. The subway system and major bus routes run on the regular schedule until 2 am, and you will still have buses running at 1 hour interval even after that. Buy tokens in bulk. The monthly pass is really expensive and have no cost advantage over the tokens if you make less than 8 round trips per week.

I live in Scarborough (just moved away from Markham/Sheppard) and it took me anywhere from 45-90 minutes to get to St George campus. This was on a small, unreliable bus route.

I could always get home, though, no matter what time of day because I lived very close to the main street (Sheppard), which was a blue night route. Lots of waiting around though.

(just posting to give an idea of how long it could take)

The TTC does have frequent service during the rush hours (5-10 min) so you should have no problems getting to U of T in the morning, but late night service can be sparse. I suggest you find a place that is close to a East-West bus route and go from there. If you are here for a week, try getting a weekly pass or a convention pass if the workshop can arrange one.
