View Full Version : Getting marks changed after exams?

I'm wondering if it's possible to get your final grade changed after an exam. I haven't done this before so no idea. Reason I ask is because I ended up with a C in a biology course at UTM and went into the exam with around an A-, I know I did well on the exam, it was pretty easy so I don't know how my mark ended up dropping so much. From what I've heard, the marks in the class were curbed down (which I find ridiculous, to put it down from a B+ to B is one thing but to reduce it so that it's below 70 is just evil).
Anyways, assuming I get my final exam (can't pick it up until 2 weeks after the exam period end date so mid May), and that the mark on my final exam doesn't correspond to getting a C in the class then how would I go about trying to get my grade fixed or is it even possible? Normally I wouldn't care about going from a B+ to a B or something and I'm in 4th yr so I've never questioned it before but this one seems to be a bit over the top.
Thanks

You certainly can
You have to "buy" your final exam and iirc if there is an error, your money gets refunded + mark changed

It does seem like a significant drop. Before you challenge the grade, ask to review the exam.

Yeah I know you have to pay for it, I think it's $13. But who do I contact about it if the math is wrong? The prof? The registrar? And if it is wrong but they reduced down the entire classes marks by whatever amount and mine's isn't a mistake based on the reduction then is it even possible to get it changed?

IIRC, the prof
Basically, if there's an error on the Prof/TA's part, you will get your mark changed.

For a course like bio, its less subjective so you have a better chance of getting it adjusted.
Marks can be changed if there's calculation errors. Request a copy of your exam, go through it and see if there's addition mistake(s).
If your calculation from all the previous tests/assignments dont add up (ie: exam was belled down), you can submit a petition and have the non-bellcurved grade re-instated (at least thats what i was told by registrars).

Just go talk to the prof first. When I was in a similar situation in my last year of undergrad and was applying to grad school. I got my marks early (through the prof I was going to do my masters with) and had a similar drop in an obvious bird course (construction). Went and talked to the bird course prof and he just said he would look into it, and the next day I had a much different mark. After talking to others, it was obvious he had 'belled' down.

I just have the same issue, I saw my final mark today and there is no way I dropped that much since the prof GAVE OUT most of the exams questions ahead and all I need to do is to memorize the answers. The prof prob. belled down my exam but I actually need the marks to send to graduate school for final confirmation. I emailed the prof and she hasn't got back at me, I am traveling out of the country tonight so I can't even review my exams in the next couple of weeks. Who else should I email (academic counselor?) Thanks

Think the remarking process is going to be different for every school.
Down at UTSC, there are 2 options, both done through eService.
i) Buy back your exam (although some courses don't allow this), don't know if it's photocopied. Once you get your exam, you can check for any errors. If you need it regraded you have to file a petition through eService listing your reasons/proof. I think you also get your fee refunded if your mark changes.
ii) Clerical Check (I believe you receive a photocopied version of your exam) - You are only allowed to check the arithmetic. Anything marked incorrectly, you have to refer to option i). If there are any arithmetic errors, they are corrected, and you are refunded your fee.

If youre 4th year I imagine you somewhat know the profs. I'd just ask if they can look into it, mistakes happen, otherwise you will have to pay the fee to look at it.

Depends where you are in your degree, what you are trying to do after your degree, etc.
If you are early in your degree I would get it checked out to the max. If you are in 4th year and already got into a master's or another program, I would look into it but I wouldn't waste money. If you aren't sure what you want to do, I would do what it takes to get it checked out.

Just a question about getting your exams back. Part of this one was multiple choice (there were only around 20 MC questions). So would they have your MC mark included on there or give you back the MC sheet otherwise I can't really tell what my mark is supposed to be if a portion of the exam is missing.

the stupid thing is why you have to pay like $30 to see your exam when there may have been possible mark calculation errors. You only get a refund IF you find an error. Imagine having to pay for each course exam just to make sure there were no calculation errors and you forfeit it if there are no errors. Such a BS rule.
