1. Any NAS that doesn't require formatting and supports NTFS? I really don't want to copy everything off or buy a new drive.

2. Any NAS that supports Plex, aside from a $400 Synology?

3. How poor is the DNS-320 performance? And if it cacks, is there any way of retrieving the data via PC?

Thanks.

Will you consider setting up a Windows-based computer/server as a NAS ? ie ... low-power CPU, 4GB RAM, Intel giga-eth NIC, lots of HDs, RAID card ... It should beat any pre-built NAS on the market in terms of performance.

Thanks for the suggestion. I had thought of that, yes, but it's not my preference. I just got the LG Smart TV Upgrader, so I'm looking to do this on the cheap.

Possibly a pogoplug (or dockstar)? Not sure if it supports Plex...

DNS-320 should do you fine. I believe it supports NTFS, but i guess it really doesn't matter what file system it does support as long as it can write large files and can be accessed by your computer/TV.

I have older 323 and 321s. (I have a 320 that is still in its box.)

I don't have any problems, with even the slower 321, streaming 1080p.

With regards to the file format. There are EXT2/3 drivers for Windows that could be used to install an orphaned DNS-3xx drive in a PC to retrieve data. However, this will only work for JBOD or mirrored drive configurations. If any striping is used, then the data is gone. (I am not aware of any software Raid, Dlink-emulator using the EXT2/3 file system - that would be a handy tool!)

For NAS on a budget, get the WD mybook live gigabit NAS 3TB ~ $199 or the 2TB ~159. Works well with LG ST600 and WDTV live streaming. You dont need plex as it will stream HD movies directly to those two media players. Besides I find PLEX support on the LG to be buggy.

That's what I was thinking, but I wasn't sure if the Twonky MKV problem was restricted to Samsung products. Thanks for letting me know.
