My daughter's birthday is this month and I want to get her an MP3 player. I wish I could get her an ipod touch but it is too expensive. The minimum requirement would be to play music and it should have a screen so she can find her songs. Ideally it would have other features like the ability to put on games and audiobooks.
All our music is in itunes on our Apple computer so I think if I don't go with an Apple product (ipod) then I'll have to change the music that goes onto the MP3 player to mp3 format and I'm not sure how much of a problem that will be.
I would hope to spend less than $50 but we have a long road trip this spring so I might be willing to invest more...

Any suggestions of MP3 players, or brands to avoid, or formatting issues, or great deals would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Find a used early generation iPod Touch on Kijiji or something. One of the few that will have ebooks and games.

Honestly though, the kid is 7 and is 99% likely to forget it somewhere or break it it. Just get something cheap, most mp3 players let you just drag and drop songs onto them.

That's a tall order for $50.

How about a 6th gen Nano clone? MP3 so you would have to convert from iTunes.

Alright, I guess I guess I was hoping for too much. I'll just get a cheap one (but that one from ebay I'm not sure about). Does it matter which one? Is there a good deal on one somewhere or should I just go to Walmart and grab something?

THanks.

I have a Sandisk Sansa Clip+ MP3 player. It's relatively cheap. 2 GB model is $40. 4 GB $50. Cheaper of course when on sale. Supports MP3, WMA (including secure WMA), Ogg Vorbis, and FLAC file formats. Add a MicroSD card for more memory.

Another + for the Sandisk Sansa Clip+. Or, if you're lucky, you may be able to find a Dell DJ20/DJ30 5gb MP3 player for under $10. They came out in 2005 I believe..

7 years old and no battery life left......

I would reccomend either a sandisk or a creative zen model in that price point.

^Two screws to replace the battery. The fact that the battery is sealed inside the unit could also be seen as a plus for a parent. Anything else?

Great! Thanks a lot everyone. When I was looking at the Sansa Clip Plus at FS this morning it went on sale as I was looking at it! The 4GB is on for $29 so I got one (sale ends May 10). THanks again.
