View Full Version : Getting Taller?

HEY THERE. I'm 18 year's old and my height is around 5"8 my weight is around 130 pounds. So far what I've read is that you grow until your 21. Was wondering if anyone could recommend any stretches to get taller or food . I've been eating healthy lately , no junk food etc. Over the past month I've been eating all my greens and stuff and still no increase in height not even a some CM. I know it's all genetics but I know a lot of people who parents are like 5foot and their kids are like 5"11 to 6"0. How the heck do people grow so tall? I tried to get my HGH up by exercising so hopefully that will work. Anyways some advice would be appreciated. If you have something that works for you don't mind posting it :) thanks!

Unfortunately, there's really nothing that you can do to increase your height. At least I've never heard of anything that you can do via fitness or nutrition. Height is pretty much 100% genetic as long as nutrional needs are met.

I'd like to know who says you keep growing until you're 21. They have no idea what they're talking about. I'm past 21 and I'm still growing. Not in height (stopped in my teens when my head hit the roof), but elsewhere. Cells throughout the body are constantly regenerating.

As for the OP, he/she should try hanging upside down from a trapeze, or invest in an Inquisition-style rack. Or just buy platform shoes.

It's only part genetics. You have a potential, you can't get past it but you might not be there yet so keep eating and exercising (shooting hoops, pull up type exercises, and just general sports and running). And drink milk of course.

And eat lots of McDonalds burgers for the steroids. How else to explain the height of N. American Asians compared with their cousins back home?

Milk and a lot of activities involving the legs. When I was a kid I used to love milk. Minimum 3 glasses of milk a day when I was still in elementary school. I also played a lot of sports, mainly soccer, foot hockey and track&field. Now i'm 6'3 and asian which is wayyyy above the average male asian height. Posture and hair style is another way to increase your height. One reason why so many asians appear so tall today is because of the faux hawk haircut. That style makes you appear 2-3 inches taller.

In all seriouness, there's still possibility of growth.

Alot of former classmates/friends from highschool 4-5 years ago, some were smaller than me, taller than me now

I noticed that all the people that had growth spurts post-highschool engaged in alot of running/tennis/soccer/etc

I'm no doctor but I am guessing their knee growth plates were still open

Definitely all the food available in a Western has probably already given you the most potential height (and all the hormones and stuff they put in it).

Classic case is N. Korea and S. Korea. Same people just about 1-2 generations split, and there is a huge height and size difference between them.

With all due respect, I really think you need to stop obsessing about this height issue and chasing gimmicks ( i.e stretches / food ) to bump your height cause assuming you're an otherwise healthy kid eating a relatively well balanced and healthy diet , there simply is nothing you can do about it...it's an issue of genetics first and foremost. That said, if you really are being bothered by your height, I'd strongly suggest you see your GP to confirm there aren't any health issues at play and to share your height related concerns with him or her directly.

So, all that being said, I wouldn't worry about it.........you'll probably be somewhere around 5' 10 " + and could easily end up being 6 feet tall.

FWIW ...you may have some fun with these.....( and please....take these ' calculators ' with a grain of salt ;) )..

There's nothing "wrong" with being 5'8, just like there's nothing "wrong" with being bald. It's just that given the preference, people would prefer not to be.

Being 5'8" didn't seem to be an issue for Bruce Lee......;)

oh wow. Look at Mr. Abs!

The only non-painful way to beat genetics is the use of growth hormone. It is expensive and can be done legally in the states through 'anti-aging' clinics. Not sure if the laws/loop holes have changed.
Side effects are deformed bone and muscle growth. Theres some other effects, but I can't remember them off the top of my head.

I grew half an inch in highschool. I had my growth spurt when I was 11-13. I thought that I was going to be 6'3" or 6'4" and have a shot at the NBA but 6' will have to do. :D With my faux-hawk, I'm like 6'2".

Check out the guards on the India-Pakistan border. Every day they stage elaborate displays (presumably at least in part for tourists) where they try to out-do each other. They take their tallest troops, then dress them up to try and appear even taller. It would be funny seeing a little Chinese guard facing them if they performed a similar routine in Kashmir (occupied by all three nations). (Of course the Chinese guard would have a full regiment behind him, along with much bigger tanks).

Excessive dribbling (and goal-scoring) in the case of Leo Messi. :D

Even with hormone treatment he's nowhere near 5'8".

Not that it seems to bother him.

Correct......let nature take it's course. Give yourself till you're 21.;)

And, if by 21, you end up being 6'0", then that's fine - but if you only stay at 5'8" for the rest of your life, then that's equally as fine as well.

At 18 years old, you are most likely at your full height.
Why do you care about being a certain height anyway? A good personality and confidence >>>>>>>>>> Height

My bro is 5'3 and he is good at sports. He uses his speed, agility and size:strength ratio. He's ony 5'3 but at his peak he was 160lbs. He was like a little muscle stump. He is older now. So he doesn't have much time for exercise, so he has lost a few lbs over the years. But I still refuse to arm wrestle him as I don't want to lose to a shrimp. lol

Anyways! OP you should love your 5'8 beautiful self. Height isn't that important. Whats important is the height of your heart. :)

Depends on when you started puberty and if your growth plates have fused. The average man stops growing until the age of 21, but those who started puberty late or "late bloomers" can grow until the age of 25. My older brother grew 2 full inches after the age of 21 (6'2" to 6'4"), and he thought he was done at 18 as that was the last time he grew. So you may have a couple of inches left and may reach 5'10-'6'0 depending on if your growth plates have fused or not.

At 5'8", you shouldn't worry about height unless you're trying out for the NBA or something. Also, fix your posture if its not that great. Fixing mine gave me almost 2 inches!

You might want to work on becoming left-handed while you're at it. I can't believe how many major countries' leaders are lefties. It seems to be way beyond normal.

Take it from me, a guy who's spend countless hours researching this stuff.

I myself have been struggling to grow taller the past year and a half or so (just turned 17 at the end of February). I have tried vitamin routines, and other supplements.

Oddly enough, I have grown at least half an inch in the 6-8 months year, probably closer to one inch after basically not growing since I was 14 (till now).

Could be a coincidence, or just resulted from simple diet and vitamin changes.

I am still very far away from my potential however, at roughly 5'9 (disregard previous posts where I claimed 5'8-9, I was realy around 5'7.5 and realized i measured wrong). My father is 5'9 and my mom cloe to 5'7 and I was projected to be 5'11-6' throughout my whole life.

I don't know what it is man, it just started bothering me alot in the past year and a half or so.

I was always a taller kid when I was younger, till about the age of 13, then I seemed to slow down significantly and am now a shorter guy at around 5'9. Plus the fact that pretty much all of my male family members were taller then me till recently when I reached the same height as my father and grandfather, kind of erked me. All my friends seemed to either grow taller then me or match me in height, despite having shorter parents.

LOL that's exactly what I was wondering. Statistically height does have advantages professionally and getting a partner in life. But don't let the lack of get in your way of achieving what makes you happy.

This is true to an extent, but it is blown way out of proportion than it should be. Also, what exactly is the height cut off to be considered "tall" these days? I'd say 6'3"+ is where you are considered tall and reap all the "benefits" of being tall. I'm 6'1" and feel pretty damn average these days.

6'1 is pretty decent man. I'm 5'11, wish I was 6'1 haha.

But I agree, there isn't a huge difference visually unless you are 6'3 and up.

Sadly, I wish I played more sports growing up... could've been 6'1 if I ate them burgers and did those pull ups.....

Although height does give you a NATURAL advantage, you can still succeed in pretty much anything if you work at it.

eg, Tom Cruise, Usher, Sarkozy, shiizz even Nate Robinson.
