I'm looking for a low-usage pay as you go phone. I want a low-usage plan with a decent phone, preferably with wi-fi access. Data plan is not too important, as long as I have wifi.

Telus has a trade-in offer. I was thinking of this.

LG Optimus with google for $119. Includes $20 activation credit
- I will trade my old phone. The trade in value of the phone is zero, But they are giving a bonus of $50 for the trade in.
I will buy a $100 card and then good to go for a year
Just the basic pay as you go plan. Talk time is expensive - 30 cents per minute. No other frills.

This works to 400 mintues usable over the next year. That should be enough for my use.

Phone Price: $119.00
Trade in: -50.00
Phone Card $100.00

Total 169.00
HST 21.97

So, I pay $190.97, including taxes for a good Android phone, and a year of low use (400 minutes).

Is this good? Can someone comment if this is a good plan or is there something better?

why not look at Wind or Mobilicity?
you can get a cheaper phone (buy it outright) and then jump onto one of their plans. They're none-contract, so you can cancel anytime

Wind is still offering the unlimited incoming, it is the best deal

.20 cents per minute outgoing for Canada and US
Unlimited incoming.

Worse case, you call someone and ask them to call you back. .20 for that call. Talk all you want.

Caller ID, Call Waiting etc all included.

The only downside is the phone selection is limited and the service area sucks. But it doesn't sound like that is too important to you.

thanks for replying, Hamant and Gee.

I was also looking at a good Android phone. Right now I am paying 18.68 on roger retention plan with limited minutes and no call display [which I would like to have]. I would be spending about 224$ on rogers per year. But on this I would be done for the whole year for $190 with a good phone in hand. This was my basis for choosing the Telus phone and plan.

I did check Wind and Mobilicity. The free incoming in Wind is really tempting but they don't have a good phone for a low price for prepaid.

Hi,
I wonder if Wind is available to Montreal people. I'm not able to locate a physical store in Montreal; however, it seems that we can order Wind phones with online.
Thanks!!!

Rogers pay as you go has a few phones with wi-fi. (all under $100)

I know that Futureshop recently had a $30 activation bonus with purchase (I think this is a constant promotion, but I'm not sure).

Rogers has a few different pay as you go plans - one is 1 cent/minute evenings (after 8pm) and weekends. 39 cents/min during the day.
