Hello

Not sure where to post this, so i thought I'd try here

I'm looking for a hardtail bike to buy for under $400 (taxes everthing in). I prefer to buy new (as Im a beginner and don't really know what to look for on a used bike) but am still open to used bikes.

I saw a Jamis X2 trail for $500 at Sportchek, but i don't want to spend that much on a bike right now in my life!
I'm planning to do casual trail riding but mostly road riding

any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

You get what you pay for, and for under $400, you will not get much. For that price range I think you'd have to go to Canadian Tire or Wal-Mart.

You'd probably be much better off with a quality used bike. Where are you located? Perhaps there's a co-op bike refurbishment place in your neighbourhood?

If you plan on doing mostly road riding get a road bike or hybrid.

well, my issue is that I may still take it off road, also i would not be on pavement all the time, so a road bike is out of the question

I will consider looking at some hybrids

I know sportchek has Reebok Antic on sale for $299, pretty good bike for the price, plus you can get extra 10%off if you get in on May 16/17

I find that when most people say this... By off road they mean riding over a patch of grass, through a nicely groomed dirt road, or hopping the odd curb or two (when the slant is 2 feet away).
But if you are doing some hard core trails and tearing it up on the downhills... go for it!

Worst case scanario... You could fit some 26 x 1-1/8th slick tires, and it'll fly!

But for brand new... $400 will get you a very low quality new mountain bike.
You're better off buying a used bike. If you wanted to spend say... $600ish.. Then you could get something decent.

but off road I mean some trails around southern ontario, but that will represent less than 10% actual use of the bike. That 10% is still enough for me to rule out a road bike though.

Where you located anyways? If you are close around bikes stores, definitely go have a look first.

I was in your shoes exactly a month ago and ended up getting a 2011 Trek 3700 for $439. Awesome bike so far!

In that price range, probably one of the Ironhorses is pretty good bang for your buck...Like the Ironhorse Mavericks.
