Just curious. I have never had a mammal pet, not sure how owners deal with this.

Without a pad or tampon, won't the blood stain the floors and furniture all over your home?

Get them spayed/neutered before they're old enough to go into their first heat... problem solved.

However i've had a small breed dog going through heat. You just drape sheets over your furniture, and throw them in the laundry after finished. Blood comes out surprisingly easy. Also the blood part lasts only around 1-2 weeks. Then you dont worry about it again for a long time.

we had our little female puppy spayed when she was 5 months old....before her first heat...

This was on the recommendation of the vet re: cancer and that having her spayed, she would have less probability of certain cancers (due to the lack of the female reproductive organs)...

Our little one remains healthy after the surgery, she is more than a year old now....though I kind of wouldn't mind if she had puppies...she is the cutest thing and just imagining her with little ones puts a huge smile on my face...

Cats and dogs need to be spayed/neutered. This won't be an issue if they are fixed. It is part of being a responsible pet owner.

My dog was fixed when she was about 3 years old. Before that, we made a "diaper" for her, the outside being fabric with a pad on the inside. I'm sure a baby diaper could even be modified (i.e., cut a hole for the tail) to fit a dog.

There are dog diapers. We have two poodles from the same litter. One went through her period that lasted 19 days, and we changed her diapers 3 to 4 times a day. The other one didn't have her period at all, which was very strange.

holy smokes....glad I got a boy instead of a girl! Bad enough I have to deal with it so I really don't want to have to deal with pads for my dog! lol

I have a maltese/yorkshire terrier mix and I heard that they usually go through their first heat at 8 months +.
With that in mind, I had my dog booked for her spaying at 6.5 months. Well, she had her first heat at 5.5 months.
Freaked the hell out of me! Surprisingly, its not as much blood as I thought there would be. She bled for 3 days and she was done.
And yes, those doggy diapers work great!
