Can anyone recommend any good flights to sydney, australia from toronto?...i plan on leaving end of june or early july. i've been checking some sites and seems like 1800-2000 for qantas or air new zealand or i could go 1600 for US airlines. i would prefer not to fly on any US airlines.
thanks.

Travelled back and forth a fair number of times a few years ago, and here are my two cents:
AC is the way to go, but it is pricey - comfortable planes and fairly direct (short stop in Vancouver). My preference may be skewed as I have Aeroplan status and have had good success with upgrades (with the new VAN flight the upgrade is good the whole trip).
I have also flown with NZ and it was not too bad. Crappy US flight to LA, but the remainder is on NZ which I find better than AC (similar planes/entertainment and better food and service).

When is the cheapest time of the year to fly? How much should I expect to pay?

Flights to Australia have two high seasons, during their summer and during our summer.
The cheapest will be in between. I'd suggest late May or late September for the cheapest. If you are willing to fly on one of the US carriers, $1400 will sometimes be available and occasionally cheaper. United will often be the cheapest, because they fly old and cramped planes on their flights to Australia.
Of course whether you want to travel so close to their winter months is another question.
