My car was keyed at an underground parking lot.

By the looks of it, someone kicked my bumper (Shoe rubber mark) and keyed the passeger side rear pannel.

I believe surveillance camera might have caught this in action, I am going to check with the plaza landlord tomorrow.

I have a few questions regarding this matter.

If the surveillance camera has caught this footage, Do I report to the police?

I do not want to leave the car keyed because it could get rusted, so If I fix this with my insurance, would my Insurance go up for this kind of accident?

Im driving a BMW 2011 3 Series Cabriolet, How much would it cost to repair this?

Any information would be appreciated.. Really frustrated.

Why would someone do such a thing?!

Yes first thing is collecting the witness information wherever possible and file a police report.

You can go to a police reporting place or an actual police station. I think you can call your region's non-emergency line at this hour and ask for advice.

I believe you are in peel so call Peel region's non-emergency line and talk to an officer and ask him/her how to proceed.

The police don't have all the time in the world to follow through an investigation very quickly so you will have to do all the leg work in obtaining security footage w.e. Then you forward it to them.

Thank you,

I just called the police station and I'm waiting for an officer to call back.

I hope the police can catch this crook.

What would happen to the guy if they catch him?

What would happen to the guy if they catch him?

Likely not much.

If the person can be identified, and a charge is laid, that person is still considered innocent until proven guilty.
Then that person uses all the tactics that keep getting broadcast across the internet about how to fight you traffic ticket, such as this one:
http://forums.redflagdeals.com/ask-me-anything-about-fighting-your-traffic-ticket-speeding-parking-etc-1178211/

Well, all of those same tactics would apply to a Mischief to Property charge for the damage to your car.
e.g. Delayed trail, file 11b, charge stayed, person walks.

And in the unlikely event that the person was convicted, the person pleads financial hardship and receives no fine, but receives 2 hours of community service work as a penalty.
Good deal for them.

Sorry to hear about this.

Had no idea, people still did this sort of thing unprovoked and out of jealousy.

If the camera identifies the person,I'd say report it.

The Police may not do anything but the insurance company lawyers may be more motivated.

Best of luck on this.

How do you know it was unprovoked? Sounds like he was followed and ambushed. I would check the video for the entry into the garage of the OP and a 2nd vehicle and the exit footage for it soon after.

I don't. Just assumed it was jealousy based on the nice car.

More to this story than OP is telling us.

although jealousy based vandalism does occur. Probably a certain element of *********ism on OP part.

Did you double park or cut someone off before parking?

My buddy told me his 335 was scratched all around, and made an insurance claim. He said the bill at the dealer came out to 7k

Does it even matter? Why, would that justify damaging someone's property?

The more key marks you have the more they envy you?

That or person who keyed your car works at a autobody place nearby and wants your business?

Wow, sorry to hear about that...

I was thinking wow this sucks, then I read a BMW 3 vert so the person did it because they were really jealous. :(

A couple of years ago, my dad's coworker's car got keyed/damaged at a GO station. He said he claimed it under vandalism or something and if I remember correctly he said his insurance rates never went up.

Hopefully that points you in the right direction.

A couple of years ago, part of the ceiling on my garage broke off and crashed down on my car.

I made a claim for the repairs.

My rates never went up.

If you're not at fault, I don't think it's legal for insurance companies to increase your rates.

Good luck!

Thank you so much for your kind and supporting messages.

I talked to the police today and he said he was going to check all the cameras and stuff, he was a very nice guy.

I didn't cut anyone off or park close to someone else, I drive safely and defensively.

If my insurance rate doesn't go up, it would be a smart to claim it right? is there a catch or something?

Shouldn't this be under the comprehensive coverage?

Every panel on my car was keyed in my driveway. Made a claim after making a police report. It doesn't effect your rates because the damage isn't caused by an accident while driving.

Sorry to hear that OP, that must be frustrating as hell...

Unfortunately, as has been mentioned, it's extremely unlikely that this guy will be caught. Even if he is, chances are you won't get compensation. Depending on the repair cost, you will have to see if it's worth your insurance covering this, and talk to your insurance company to get an idea of how much your rates might go up from making the claim.

You might want to invest in a good dash cam with motion sensor, because there is a good chance you could have caught the guy on camera.. Even though this might not do much, it's helpful with a conviction and might even make the news if it happens again.

But chances are you are SOL and will have to eat the cost of repairing the car. Just take it as another one of those rare, completely unfair things that you just have to deal with, accept, and move on with your life.
