I know I shouldn't be comparing a new and used car but, I am on the unsure which vehicle I should purchase as my first car. I was thinking of either purchasing either:
1) A used 2008 Honda Civic DX-G model with around 120K

OR

2) A new 2012 Toyota Corolla CE

Again I am unsure which vehicle to own as my first car. I would get the Civic but the 120K is kind of a put off. Also I was thinking this would be a good time to purchase a Corolla as they are having their red tag sale. Also I am thinking that there would only be roughly a 8-9K difference in price between the two.

Does anyone have any recommendations or advice on the 2 cars?
Any input would be appreciated.

How long do you plan on keeping the car for?

I plan to keep it for at least 3-4 years

Don't bother buying a new car if you're only keeping it for a few years, unless of course you don't mind the depreciation. Best bet would be to go with the used one.

Don't limit yourself to only two cars....set up a budget and see as many vehicles as possible. If 120K on the 08 Civic, look at another with less kms. Do a Carproof and if it's clean (little or no accidents etc), have a qualified mechanic inspect it BEFORE you buy it.

Go with new..
I'm returning my 2008 Civic DX-G with only 48600km due to a head gasket issue that Honda is IGNORING..
Engine was redesigned for 2008 to save cost..

Used is always the cheapest if you know what/when to buy. In your case a nearly new car 1-2yrs old is what to aim for. Best used value is the Hyundai Elantra Touring as they are very reliable and dirt cheap used but have the balance of 5yr/100k warranty.

That Civic might be ok but do the research first.

Let me break it down for you:

2012 Corolla CE = $18000-$19000 (Using 2012 price With levies and freight, excludes tax, takes into account RED TAG discount)

Now / 1 year later = $14500

3 years later = $9400

Therefore, if you keep this car for four years depreciation will be $2150-$2400 per year

-- Comparing it to 2008 Honda Civic

Now: $14000 (Med range for EX modem, 4 dr)

1 Year later: $13500

3 years later: $8950

Therefore yearly depreciation will be $1262

------

Overall, in 4 years, owning new car cost you 3.5k more - which isn't that much more actually, but it boils down to you how price sensitive you are. The longer you keep the car, the benefit of owning used car diminished.

Careful on buying a used 2008 Honda Civic.

The 2006 – ( early ) 2009 Honda Civics equipped with the 1.8 liter engine have major issues with cracked engine blocks....so much so, Honda increased the engine warranty on the engine block to 8 years.....so, you may want to opt for a late 2009+ model to avoid this problem completely.

Congratz on making a useless post. Anyone that's not brain dead knows a new car is better than a used car anyday; it's about factoring cost into the equation too.

+1 Well said. Plus not all new are 100% reliable. Then there is the dreaded dealer ******** with them typically overrecommending extras during service. New is a farce.

Op, wondering if you have an update or you're still looking for one.

BTW - Thanks to those who pointed out the engine block issue with 2006-08 civic DX-G? I'm now looking onto the 2010 models.
