Hello,

I'm looking to buy a car and will trade in my existing Corolla. It's a 2003 Sport trim with 280,000km. It runs great but it has 2 quarter-sized rust spots on the top of the car between the windshield and the sunroof. According to VMRCanda.com, my car is worth $4000 wholesale. Is it safe to assume that I should reduce this amount by $1000 because of the rust? In other words, would $3000 be a reasonable trade-in value?

Thanks in advance

Try to push for at least $4000. Even though yours has quite high mileage, the rust you are describing is minimal.

Really? Racist POS.

On stuff like this the trade value will be a wobbly figure I'd think. The car is going straight to auction. Not too many dealers are going to want something with 280k on it.

Consider selling privately?

My apologies brah! I forgot the majority of RFD is comprised of old school adults in their 50s.

dealers whether new or used all go by the black book and seeing it is almost a 10 year old car with so much mileage it is not worth more than 1000 bucks as a trade in.
you are better selling it off privately for a bit more to some kid that just got his license.

If it's manual it's worthless, otherwise is worth $2000-2500 wholesale.

OP, let me know which dealership gives you that amount.

If they give you $3k, maybe they'll give me $20k for my '08 Nissan Altima Coupe 3.5SE Premium/Bose Package with 109k/km.

Ya that's what I was thinking when I first read the title. I'd be surprised if he got anything over $1000 for a trade in.

Best bet is to sell it yourself.

Almost all dealers would give you close to nothing on something with that kind of mileage.

I think he meant, they increased his TRADE IN value and didn't decrease his MSRP much. Dude will be attracted to the trade in value and will end up paying more for the new car, at the end, his trade in probably ends up being 1000 bucks.

Sell it on kijiji for $1000, that is all it's worth. A dealer might give you $500.

Try Kijiji at $1,000.

Posted this on another thread. Don't mean to jack OP's thread. But I have a 1999 Subaru Forester that has some... issues. If I were to sell it on kijiji as-is, do I list all the these issues in the ad or wait 'till they call me and start reading them the list. Also, should I list only big issues or smaller ones too (i.e. driver seat heater doesn't work)? Thanks.

From a buyer's perspective, posting an ad with all the details definitely shows you're more mature and not trying to screw someone over. You might get less people interested, but the chances of them being serious buyers are significantly higher (based on my experience). With an ad that just has brief info and a number, there's tons and tons of flakers.

this poster knows what hes talking about! for everyone else and the OP who think you can squeez 3-4k for a car like that...wake up!

Sure its a reliable car but anyways if you sell for even $1500 then please PM and tell me I was wrong:)

best of luck!

trade in always as last resort.

sell privately if no takers then go see if u can get a good amount on trade in.

your car has so much mileage, and it doesn't matter if you drove it 100% on the highway. That's just a selling term, it doesn't mean squat.

profit margin on that car is too low for the dealer to consider seriously.

They also might refuse it.

But I'm assuming that $4000 wholesale is reflecting a car in ' mint ' condition.

Any paint chips / scratches ?

What shape are the tires in ?

So the Honda dealer offered $2000 for the car. I used the proceeds for my new purchase: 2010 CR-V EX-L (no NAV) with 30K km. Sticker price was almost $30K but I negotiated OTR for $29K which included the $2K I got for the Corolla. I got the dealer to install OEM side step bars as well! ($700 value)

Somebody got an offer of $2300 - two years ago:

With that many km, I think you'll be lucky to get much, if anything, from a dealer.

Do you really think your car is worth $4k? LOL!

If you sell it privately you'd get $700-$900 after bartering, a dealer might give you $400-$500.

Btw, a $4k used car has 1/3 of your km

Did you guys not read his update? he got $2k for it. Not too bad, considering you didn't have to sell privately.

I was offered $6k for my 2010 pontiac vibe (50k km). Needless to say I'll be keeping my car for quite a bit longer :)

So, is VMRCanada.com inaccurate, or the accuracy goes down as the car gets older?

booblehead

Trade in value is determined by current market factor. In the end, it's what a wholesaler/auction house is willing to pay for the car at that particular point of time, blackbook value is just one of many general tools used.

He didn't get $2k for it. The dealer just made it LOOK like he did to make him happy! It's common practice.

Selling it privately and then negotiating a deal on the same car he just got would have saved him $$$.

I'd look at the wholesale price on VRM + autotrader (on the lower end).

I'd look at taking another $500-$1000 off of that too if you're buying private, but depends on what type of demand that car has (i.e. less for manual, less if there are tons of them for sale, location, etc.).

haha exactly. That CRV is worth maybe $23,000, and that's without the sale of the corolla.
