it would either have to be

aaron.steinbergx@gmail.com

or

aaron.steinberg6@gmail.com

having a number in your email just blows

Just drop the period from in between the words. See if that's taken.

Have you tried the .ca option? Also, did you graduate from a university that offers free alumni email accounts? For stuff like that, I tend to use my alumni email so it's XXXXXX.XXXXXX@alumni.utoronto.ca.

Doesn't really matter, it's a gmail address, making it unprofessional.

Usually professions have a brand attached to them. For example, let's say a bank manager from CIBC contacted me via email through frank@gmail.com.

I might not take as seriously as frank@cibc.com

Same goes for frank@hotmail.com

or frank@yahoo.com

ect...

If it helps though, I recently tried to grab an extra gmail just to get access to a free trial service, and used something insane like frank25341753176@gmail.com and it was actually taken.

I think they opened up a gmail.ca recently

In any event, the term that might describe frank.watson@gmail.com is personal, rather than professional. You can use professional email domains with gmail though, it takes a little bit. People will still know you are sending from gmail though if they look hard enough.

Could you imagine a police detective emailing you from gmail.ca? Or a car dealer? What about a nigerian consulate?

Do you have a professional association you can get an email address from? I use first.last@ieee.org, which is a respected electrical engineering society.

Some people append the year of their birth to their email address, which you may or may not be comfortable with.

What about aaron.steinberg@gmail.ca?

You have a problem with Canada?

The 6 is better, typically when people use x's as a replacement I take offense to it for some reason. Like thx. It's snide.

The x after your name could mean any number of things but usually it's a negative association.

The 6 is a little more sporty.

......or you can buy a domain with your name or a variation of it if it's not available (initial.lastname, firstname.initial, or a .ca or .net domain, etc). Then host your email for free at google apps (http://www.google.com/a/).

This would cost you about $10/year for the domain.

You can add your year of birth after the name.

Again, that is more like personal, rather than professional.

Why not just get a @me.com email?

https://auth.me.com/authenticate?service=mail&ssoNamespace=appleid&formID=loginForm&returnURL=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cubWUuY29tL21haWwv&anchor=undefined

They probably use google apps... Actually it looks like it's an Apple product.

So I guess that's not a possibility since gmail rocks

+1 Was going to suggest that. My brother had to do it as his name is too common. For once I am happy about my weird ***** name. :cheesygri Can't speak about others but I claimed my name in all the free emails for the in case situation. Who knows if there is another person with your name out there!

As someone who received a lot of resumes, interviewed and did hiring, unless your email address is a name/word/phrase that's really socially unacceptable, no one cares. I might take notice for 2-3 seconds if you have a weird email address, but after that it's just another name/word I use to contact you and I think nothing more of it. [firstname].[lastname]@ makes no difference versus [firstname]3987234@ or anything else. It's been known for a long time now that trying to get your real [firstname].[lastname]@ for any email is very, very difficult considering all the billions of email addresses out there. Some of us who've worked at large companies can't even get that for our work emails.

Yup, I used a gmail address for job applications, didn't have any issues. I did create a new specifically with my full name in it. I don't think it's any "less professional" if you're unemployed anyway, as long as you don't use some sort of weird web handle or having something inappropriate in the address.

OP, I had the same issues as you and ended up throwing in my middle initials between my first and last name in full to make it work.

Gmail's not bad at all as far as professionalism goes. Just don't use Hotmail or Yahoo, etc. I have all my domain addys funneled to my Gmail. Use it as a catchall. Love it.
