Hi all,
So lets say all things equal which of the vehicles below would have better gas mileage over a 1000km run.
A- 3.0L V6 naturally aspirated
B- 2.0T I4
Also lets say you are cruising at 120-130 for the most part and down to 80 or below for a few minutes but between 120-130 mostly.
Thoughts?

I'm a bigger engine type of guy. I like the smoothness and torque provided.
But there are some Very good turbo 4's (i'm assuming VAG) and some crappy V6's.

In that case. I will take the 2.0T I4 if I was mostly doing highway. Lack of turning on turbo cruising, means more high MPG.
Will take V6 NA if during in mix traffic mostly.
R1lee is rich. Of course he prefer his cars with more cylinder. Do a R8 come with I4 engine? :D

what car is this? genesis?
anyways, in almost all cases, the I4 will save you gas. at ur cruising speed, you shouldnt be spoolin.
transmission gearing matters too.

i like the sound of v6 better than most i4.

The V6 will give better mileage at those speeds than the turbo 4.

i think the i4 will get better mileage.
here is some thoughts.
turbo i4 has better torque, better fuel economy and less weight.
v6 sounds better exhaust note, smoother (more power strokes per rotation), more reliable/less maintenance.

I'd go with a 2.0T I4 hands down. They're small yet efficient and produce decent amount of HP, especially for those made by VAG for the Passats and Audis. However you do have one for the Sonata which produces a big amount of power.
Its safe to say that I am happy with the output of my 2.0T I4 engine in my A4.

R1lee is just mocking me. It's a tuner brand tuned A5 to look like a R8 with that black panel. No thanks Rlee, I think I will settle with something more classy. My next car is going to be a V8, if not, then a V6.
That A5 is not as bad as the Mazda RX8 with a blacked out suicide door to loo like a R8 I saw in Richmond Hill. Just like I would never put racing strip on a Japanese sports car. A big nono!

My previous 2.3T running 94 octane gets less milage than my current 3.8 V6...
maybe becuz of the AWD vs RWD....
but definitely if i want the instant-power while crusing @ 100km/h, the V6 is super smooth....
nevertheless the Turbo off the line gives the acceleration explosion!
and i guess it depends on gearing too...
cuz i would be cruising @ 3000rpm @ 120km/h - 6th gear, while the V6 will be at around 2600rpm @ 120km/h - 6th gear

At those speeds, the Turbo in the Genesis is already running full tilt

If you want better mpg and smoother power get the v6 if you want something that will haul ***** off the line get the turbo. I think with more city driving the turbo will return better mpg especially if your idling a lot.

v6 gets better mpg and i4t hauls more ***** off the line...im guessing u mean torque.
but in anycase, hmm.......i.........dont..........

i wasn't mocking you. you asked for a R8 with a i-4 engine :)

Hi guys,
No I'm not considering a Sonata or any new car for that matter.. just doing a bit of early research as I will be getting a 'new' 2-3 yr old vehicle for the.. to-be wifey .
We're looking at 08-09 yr models from A4, Altima, BMW and VW.
Thanks

V6 for sure....you never know how bad the previous owner treated/maintained the turbo....

Vastly different cars and engines. It depends on the car, the engine and the application. Small turbo 4s do better on the EPA city cycle and highway cycle, since it favors partial throttle gentle accelerations. If you tend to floor it, you can do worse on a turbo 4. At highway speeds, the differences become smaller, and at above 120km/h, drag is the principle factor, and both designs come in at almost similar numbers.
Of the four cars mentioned above, i would get the BMW non turbo I6, or the Nissan v6. The a4 turbo I4 can be problematic depending on the year, the vw i4, vr6, or whatever, I w ould not touch with a 10 foot pole.

N/A Inline 6 all the way!
Interestingly though BMW just went from a 3.0L I6 in the 328i to a 2.0L Turbo 4. Having driven both I found the 2.0L I4 to give better mileage. However all things were not equal, there were a lot of other efficiency related changes to the car that affected the results...

compare the F10 528i with the F10 528i...........
or the F25 X3 with the F25 X3

I think a lot will depend on gearing. Between two modern engines it will be pretty close I'd suspect.
However the question is only relevant in a theoretical sense, ie what engine design most easily allows you to achieve better cruising efficiency at 120-130km/h, holding all other stuff constant (except perhaps gearing, which is arguably engine specific).
Real world depends on a myriad of other factors. I guess you are considering an A4 vs a 328? I'm bemused and baffled that you're looking at something this narrow and asinine - why not just look up their highway ratings? Why not consider other factors? Why ask this highly theoretical question?

I've own 2.0L NA, 2.0L T, and Inline6, V6.. I commute 95% hwy, 120-140km/h. I find the 6 cyclinder uses less gas than the 2.0T or 2.0 NA. even with a 6th gear in those cars. But if i did mostly city, then the 2.0T would be my choice, as the torque is much more down low and you can shift at 2000rpm.
Premium vs Regular is another thing to think about if you are concern about cost, most turbo engines require Premium gas.

Depends on the car
Would I drive a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution with a 3.0 V6? no
Would I drive a Mercedes C class with a 2.0T I4? no
Depends on the engine / setup
A regular 3.0 like the one in economy midsize sedans? no
A high reving 3.0 like the one in NSX? yes
A sluggish single-scroll 2.0T like the one in the original Genesis and Lancer Ralliart? no
A peppy twin-scroll 2.0T like the one in the new Genesis and Lancer Evolution? yes
A dated 3.0 with 200 bhp? no
A modern 2.0T with 270+ bhp? yes
(I probably wouldn't want a N20 328i only because it's still slightly down on the horsepower)
Now, it's a different story if I plan to mod it.

2.0T IL4 for city driving, 3.0 V6 for highway.
But IL6 > V6 imo.

I own a 2.0T, a VW GTI, at 130kph cruising speed I have a fuel conssumption of around 7.5 L/100km at 120 it's around 6.9, 110 around 6 and 100 around 5.5
I don't know what a 3.0 V6 would do, but the 2.0T own at low rpm because of the torque and almost no turbo lag on the 2.0T
