This guy makes the most irritating, cringe-worthy radio ads for his jewerly stores. From his voice, to the horrible humour, to the outburts and noises he makes on air, everything about them repulses me.
I'll probably never go to Spence, I hold Spence and his company in that much low regard.

you're talking about it so they got their money's worth :P
listen to enough talk radio and *all* the ads become annoying. Coreys, Harvey Brooker, Tom's Place, Omni Jewelers...

Yeah but it doesn't really matter if I'm not drawn to their store. Whenever time comes for me to buy a wedding ring and I'm mentally going through jewellers, I'll think of Spence and the bad taste they leave.
But yeah I agree with you, they're all corny and even insincere.

No other commercials are as annoying on the radio as those are. I actually change the station the second I hear his whiny voice. They will never get my business, and anybody advertising after them won't either, cause by then I've switched stations and won't hear their ad.

Remember, Spence doesn't sell cheap rings; they sell expensive rings for affordable prices. If they were selling cars they'd sell Ferrari's for the price of Toyota's

How can those guys make so much money yet skimp absolutely on a good production commerical?
Must mean you can't make money selling diamonds. They are rocks out of the ground after all.

I hate the ads so much. I just want to punch the guy in the face.
I don't know much about diamonds or wedding rings, but what I do know, is I would never, ever, ever go to Spence. Their commercials just paint them as the wal-mart of wedding rings. Selling masses and masses of rings for bottom dollar which are inferior to the quality of other places.

It makes me wonder if there is distinct difference between rare earth diamonds, and pressure cooked ones.
So what is Spence doing? Making a quick cash grab before the industry bottoms out? Or are they just selling fake jewelry?
I saw a documentary the other day about transmuting mercury to gold. The machine operator claimed the amount of energy required to do it was substantial and it basically made it NON profitable. Sort of makes me wonder how much energy goes into the mining process. I mean gold miners have to move how many tons of earth to get a nugget or a couple flakes?
It's possibly what Spence is doing, I mean I can't know for certain. The catch phrase is "visibly" better diamonds on their website. They make no mention of the diamonds being pressure cooked.
Not sure how accurate this is, but it might be.
http://www.buzzle.com/articles/synthetic-diamonds-vs-natural-diamonds.html
Diamonds are basically a crystalline form of carbon. High pressure and temperature in the Earth's crust force a lump of carbon to crystallize under pressure, leading to the creation of a natural diamond. Synthesizers of artificial diamonds recreate these conditions on the Earth's surface to create the synthetic variety of diamonds. Lab created diamonds, as they are also called, shouldn't be confused with the so-called diamond substitutes like Cubic Zirconia (ZrO2), Moissanite (SiC), YAG (Y3Al5O12) and White Sapphire (Al2O3) gems. These are carbon based diamonds, chemically identical to natural ones, albeit smaller in size and devoid of the impurities that add exotic value to natural diamonds.
So basically they are recognizable as manufactured when closely scrutinized.
So maybe the value of rare earth diamonds are probably not going to suffer? Definitely not the larger ones. I mean unless they can make them as large as the largest ones. Then again, I don't really know.
This is pretty funny...

It made me nervous when they said they wanted to create this page. Meet Sean Jones? The only reason I could think of why somebody would want to do that was to punch the guy behind those annoying radio ads right in the nose. I do them myself because you are about to make the most romantic decision of your life, and you deserve to know who you’re dealing with. There are few things more disingenuous than a slick and polished announcer making unsubstantiated claims for a business he or she knows nothing about. So instead, you get me. For better or worse.

When my gf was repeatedly nagging me going "ooh I wanna get married, with this kind of wedding and that kind of diamond ring, and blah blah..," I was like "bish please. You better have my Omega Seamaster ready if you want that ring you fake- ***** Mariah Carey."
She hasn't brought up the idea of marriage since.

They might be cheaper if they have a better buying model.

I think its a radio commercial tradition to be kind of annoying... perhaps to draw attention?
Kind of like how all car commercials have someone really cool looking guy in sunglasses driving through a twisty road... only to have a subtle smirk/smile at the end.
I think the rockcliff auto one is pretty bad too.. ITs the SAME friggin guy with a 'brand new navigator'.

annoying commercials + good business practices and product = success.
The guy knows he can be annoying because he knows the chain is better than the competitors and all he has to do is get you in. They are professional and upfront there.

Here's the problem, they obviously work.
I don't like them either, but you know what - I couldn't tell you the last jewelry store ad I heard on the radio because it probably had some smooth talker and some romantic music, like every other jewelry commercial. BUT I can tell you the exact product/focus of the latest Spence diamond commercial (diamonds like ferraria's and toyota's blah blah)
Same with the horrible Bay commercials (which I hate more than Spence) but you know what, the latest one is the Olympic Jean jacket ad that I just heard this morning... but I'll be damned if I can't remember any other clothing store commercial and the product it advertised.
It's like Buckley's - It's awful but it works.

Got our ring from Spence, really quite a different experience from literally every other place we visited. Jewellery stores are some of the worst places to shop, especially when they find out you're looking for an engagement/wedding ring. Spence was honestly refreshing after a long day of pushy salespeople. Yes the ads are so damn annoying, but I can't say enough about their service and product. They let you customize any ring you like to fit your needs, budget, etc. and have a peek a various diamonds under microscopes to see inclusions, clarity etc. A little flashy and over the top but we enjoyed it!
Should also add, they have replica rings in the showroom and you're free to try them on as you like instead of asking someone to help you, you're free to your own devices until you need someone.

That's funny because I had the exact opposite experience there when I was shopping for a ring. It's been 13 years since I stepped in there and I will never, ever go back. Absolute worst sales experience I've ever had.

If you want the best value diamond...get it at Costco.....don't laugh, ABC did a study comparing diamonds sold from Costco to Tiffany and the diamonds from Costco were amazing value:
At Costco, we bought a round diamond with almost the same specs as our Tiffany diamond. It is just over a carat with very very slight flaws and a color grade of H, nearly colorless. At $6,600, it cost $10,000 less than the similar diamond we bought at Tiffany.
Fuller said the average price for such a stone would be $8,000, a price that doesn't include the setting. Martin Fuller, considered one of the finest master gemologists and appraisers on the East Coast, carefully analyzed our purchases.
"It's a little bit of a surprise," said Fuller of the high quality of the stone. "You wouldn't normally consider a fine diamond to be found in a general store like Costco, but I'm pleasantly surprised, as well."
"It's a beautiful stone," he added.

False advertising - they sell your typical diamonds (ie not 'the best'), and will try to sell you lower grade (ie colour H, I, SI) and then compare the prices to Tiffany's.
And good luck if you ask for how their diamonds are graded - GIA or AGSL? hah, who's that?
This was accurate when I looked in 2010ish.

Went to a Spence just to see their stuff and get ring ideas. Girl working there was dumb as bricks.
She was trying to explain how they called a 6 pronged ring, "compass" because it resembled a compass. "You know, it points to the directions like a compass". Really? 6 cardinal directions?
She also pointed out a particular ring which had a bezel around it, "look how the ring embezzles the diamond".
Her and the ads clearly define the target market for their goods.
