I might be getting a new car but my current car is in my grandfather's name and as I live with my grandfather I'm on his insurance policy as the principal driver of the car.

However as I might be getting a new car and using my current car for trade in, I need the car in my name. What I'm confused about is the requirements. I know I need a Sworn statement form which I have, I know I need a safety certification (car is a 2009 so no emissions test) but my hiccup is with the insurance. I would be getting insurance on the new car (2013) but in order for me to take ownership of the 2009 so I can trade it in, I need insurance on it. Would me being the principal driver under my grandfathers insurance policy count for the insurance?

If not, is there anyway I can get insurance for the car for like 1 day as when the ownership is transferred the car is being driven to the dealer for trade-in.

Yeah, you can get temporary insurance. Call the insurance company that is doing the insurance on the new vehicle and ask them about it.

Your grandfather would just simply gift you the 09.

You should be able to just take out your own policy on the 09, and then transfer the policy to the new car when you get it.

You are allowed to periodically drive cars not on your policy. Just start your new car policy a day early and drive it to the dealership. Or tell someone from the dealership to pick it up. Or push it to the dealership.
