Guys,

I want to find a good cable internet provider instead of Robbers with unlimited bandwidth and cheap monthly fee ....

I looked around all over the internet and found the following (not in any order)

Distrubtel

Teksavvy

Acanac

---

Now when i searched online I found that Distrubtel has crappy speeds yet they are the cheapest for 28Mbps service and to add to that you cannot use your own modem and you are only limited to 1 brand which is huwaei which is utter crap IMO

Teksavvy is good and tons of good reviews but lately ppl have been complaining that they arent as good as they used to be .... but you can use your own modem

Acanac is not so good and one of the biggest issues is the no live support and everything is done thru emails and tickets and all that weird stuff .... and you can use your own modem

now which one do you guys recommend based on your use .....

I had Rogers business before (I have my own business) and I got unlimited bandwidth but I used to pay $80 or so with taxes for 12Mbps (with turbo boost I used to get 24-28Mbps) but the problem is they gave me that crappy ***** scientific atlantic small pos modem which over heats super fast and I replaced them 3 times (I rent the modem) and they would not let me get a different brand and I was told if I want another brand that I should buy the modem which to me is total bs as I do use my internet for business (majority of it) and I cant afford to have downtime and I was surprised by their treatment towards a business client .... I will never go back to Rogers nor do any business with them and I told them that because of this small issue I have also decided to cancel my Fido account as well ...

back to the topic .... which company do you guys recommend and also which modem do you guys recommend to buy ... I dont need wireless as I have a killer wireless router and everything ....

Thanks

I'm very happy with Teksavvy with a Thomson DCM 475 modem. I have the 28/1 plan with 300gig a month

There's a 300cap plan and an unlimited plan. However, TS currently has no way of measuring how much you use.

That is correct... BUT according to some on DSLreports if you go over your 300gig cap, Rogers sends a notice to Teksavvy which in turn send you a notice. Also, according to a Teksavvy e-mail, overnight downloading on DSL doesn't count towards the 300gig cap.

Ive been with Acanac fo 5 months now with their cable internet and ive been very happy with them. No issues, fair price expecially if you pay for the year up front.

Vote for Teksavvy here...best price/service. The complaints you made reference to were likely related to slower speeds in certain areas, however this is no longer a concern after the POIs were upgraded: http://blogs.teksavvy.com/2012/05/23/our-order-in-no-particular-order/

Also, Teksavvy has 24/7 support whereas Distributel/Acanac do not.

Distriubtel has a $30 activation fee whereas Teksavvy from what I can tell on their site, has a $65 activation fee. Is anyone running promotion on new connections?

I might give Teksavvy a who if they waived the fee or at least matched the Distriubtel $30.

The activation fee with Teksavvy is reduced by $20 if you buy a modem from them (which you can take elsewhere later)....so it works out to $45.

I'd stay away from 3Web/Distributel unless you want to be in the queue trying to reach tech support for 3 hours: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BpVmk3gfQsE

I have been with distributel for couple of months now. Really good experience so far. I had to call them once for technical support and call was answered within 5 minutes. However, we are moving soon and from what I gathered online they charge around $65 for address change. I might have to cancel it if they don't wave it or reduce it.

The Teksavvy website says that 2.0 docsis modem is sufficient for their 18mg package.

Do you recommend going with the 2.0 or paying extra for a 3.0 modem?

Just "cancel" and then call again as a "new" sign up in a few days. Hell, if they play hardball, I'll just go with Teksavvy. About the same service anyway and their unlimited is cheaper by $4.

Buy it directly from Teksavvy as you get $20 off activation. The model is DCM476. http://teksavvy.com/en/res-internet.asp#cable

For $100 or may be score one for under $50 on eBay and that's a savings of $30 right there.

Teksavvy also charges a $65 'move fee'.

Also, Teksavvy isn't the 'white knight' that some of the people in the thread make them out to be. I've been with them since 2007 or so, both flavors of DSL and cable and there's been lots of times where peak time saturation is a major issue and doesn't get resolved for months. I've also had several call queue problems with Teksavvy and 'referral' discounts simply disappearing that I had to call in and dispute.

That being said, Teksavvy has been good enough for me to stick around with them and stay far away from Bell & Rogers.

I've been with Acanac for 6 months now, and before that signed up my uncle and he's been using them for 2 years and going. Never had a single issue. There is the issue of them renewing the contract on you without your consent but just keep it in your calendar to switch over to monthly billing afterwards (assuming you paid for the full year to begin with). I get higher speeds than advertised (I'm at my parents house today so I can't post a speedtest), and its unlimited. They're support has always been good to me, and the biggest complaint would be the long wait times for support, but even then when I have to use support once a year it doesnt matter.

Also invest in a DOCSIS 3.0 modem, its worth it.

Been with Distributel since February. No complaints. 28/1 and unlimited for $62.04/month (that's with modern rental). Used to be with Teksavvy, but was tired of paying $50 (that's with dryloop) for a measly 6Mbit speed. They don't offer cable here so I went with a company who did. Glad I made the switch.

I'm with BOB on this one +1 for Distributel, I've been streaming 24/7 and getting insane torrent speeds, were talking 5-6 MBs for torrents on avg and max of 7-9 MBs, I get highly seeded 5-7 GB files in less than 10 mins. Never got these speeds w/ teksavvy. I also don't understand why Tek isn't avail in all areas but Distributel was able to set up an appt within 3-5 days, arent they both using Roobers lines? The tech who installed with was form Robbers too.

I'm with Teksavvy now and it's been great with it's unthrottled service. I'm just wondering, is the cable internet with Distributel and Acanac unthrottled as well?

Pay extra for a 3.0

Can you elaborate on this? Is there a noticeable performance difference between 2.0 and 3.0? I'll be signing up with Teksavvy in the next few days but I don't quite understand the reasoning for getting the 3.0. The info I found was too technical for me. Thanks.

Yes... with 2.0 the highest speed now and in the future is up to 15mbps. Anything above that you need a 3.0.

If anyone lives in areas not served by teksavvy/acanac, get start.ca - amaaaazing internet.

I was using Rogers as they were the only ones available, then found start. Speeds are insane, no throttling!!! And no contracts. If i would have stayed with robbers, i'd be paying twice as much as I am paying with start for less bandwidth and crappier speeds. I am super happy.

Upgrades on all the Teksavvy POIs except for Markham have been completed: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r27263270-Cable-Stop-Sell-Areas-June-22nd-2012-

So signups for every area (except 1) are now open.

Regarding Start.ca -> Im pretty close to switching from cogeco to start but I cant figure out what to do about the modem for their service, going for the 18mbps connection cable internet service but can't decide if I should buy the modem from them, buy one online (ebay?) or just pay $5 to rent one.

I'd like to be able to get more than 18mbps when possible and am afraid their DOCSIS 2.0 modems they support wont work faster than 18mbps.

If I buy the DPC3000 from them it's going to take 2.5 years before I'd pay it off compared to renting it (if theyd let me rent the 3.0 for $5) which may be worth it to just rent it and upgrade to something even newer thats not out yet by then instead or something.

What did you do about your cable modem? What model did you get and where did you get it from? How fast can you download on the package you are on?

I will thank you for your post in the forums if you can help me out, thank you!!!!!!!
