So we're still using this desktop that we've brought a decade ago that uses Asus' P4B266 motherboard. The specs says it can take up to 2GB RAM but I'm wondering if it's possible to try 4GB which is the max for win XP?

Thanks in advance!

DDR1 - I did exactly what you are doing on a junker computer at work. Performance gain = Nil. 768 Mb to 4 Gb. I spent $30 at a computer recycling place, it's really hard to find. Wish I didn't.
I'm now going to buy SB Celeron G530 ($45), an H61 board ($45), and 4 Gb DDR3($20) and see a massive performance jump.

I believe 2GB is the max that 845 chipset can handle.
How are you planning to upgrade to 4GB with only 3 DIMM slots ? 2GB DDR1 stick is not easy (not to mention the cost) to find .....
4 x 1GB DDR1 would cost you around $100 ... I would use that for a newer system too ...

Thanks. I didn't make the connection that the system was actually using DDR1 ram and not DDR2....
So it's better to just a better motherboard and new ram - I wonder if the ATI AIW 8500 and SB Audigy will fit in newer motherboards....
There isn't really a way to get better performance on an old computer is there....

Don't do it.
For the money you can get a way faster desktop.... hell even a laptop.

The video card is an ancient AGP card. I would be surprised if modern on-board graphics didn't perform better, ditto for the audiology. That isn't qualified though. There certainly are not AGP slots on modern boards but the Audiology ought to fit PCI.
This thing is so old your optical drive & HDD are going to be IDE VS the modern SATA, so it'll be tough to re-use them as well. There are adapters but for a $20 optical drive there is little point and an HDD that old probably is no longer trustworthy anyway. 478 Processor is beyond saving, the whole thing is pretty much recycle bound.
