View Full Version : New ISP - Bye, bye TekSavvy

I want to say good bye to TekSavvy. Internet is good at times, but mostly horrible at night. My ping reaches nearly 200/300 at night while its 16 at daytime for a MW3 server. I find that my download speeds are inconsistent too ;P
What do you guys recomend? I want something with reliable service at night, unlimited and at a good price. I'm paying $45 a month for unlimited 3 - 4mb/s internet from Teksavvy. I'm live in Richmond Hill (GTA).

Could you be more specific as to what connection you have with Teksavvy? Trying to determine whether you use cable or DSL since there's no $45 unlimited package for either service aside from High Speed DSL 6.
I'm also in Richmond Hill and on their R.Hill (Newkirk) POI and have similar speed tests with mau108. If you're using their cable service then you should also be on the same POI as we are with similar results.
Since your speedtests themselves are inconsistent, I'd take a guess that you have some other issue going on. Perhaps someone is leeching off your wifi or something. I'd get that checked.

I was just about to sign up for teksavvy 18mbps, and I see that the max they offer for cable is 28 mbps?
How the hell did you guys get up to freakin 38 mbps (as illustrated above) :)
And what modem are you guys using? Please advise. thanks.

I didn't get the plan, but I was told from my dad that you couldn't get that plan anymore. I'll check if its cable or DSL, thanks.
What software do you recomend I use to check who's on my internet? I'll be sure to contact support asap too.

I'm also half and half on Teksavvy. My cable speeds are pretty crappy and I'm also in Richmond Hill. 404/MajorMac.
When I bought the Extreme Cable package, my speeds are the exact same as when I changed it to Express cable... not even close to 18mbps..
I brought it up to there attention and they issued a ticket with rogers, but nothing was fixed because they said it wasn't on their end.

I'm on the highest tier Tek sells for Cable (28mb unlimited bandwidth) I think its 62 plus taxes. I need the unlimited bandwidth as everything in our household is Internet based. From our phone service (voip), to our tv service (parent's do a lot of online videos for their international programming), I download my shows in HD and we don't have cable or satellite service at home (haven't had for 6 years now!).
Yes its high priced, but in the end it is our essential service provider and entertainment provider.

I would like to point out that your speed tests are completely fine since you are on 3mb profile. You are getting 10mb/s because of the speed boost technology for the first 10mb data you download. Then the speed should drop back to normal to 3mb from your original post. Unless you are on 18mb or higher profile, then it would be a problem.

This might be a bit OT: Just wanted to know if you guys experience a problem similar to the following: Often my internet at home just stops working. On my iphone, it gives me errors that it cannot open a page. Laptops cannot connect to the internet either. If I switch the iphone to 3G, everything opens up normally. Does anyone know if this is because of Teksavvy internet? I never had such issues on Rogers, but I fear it might be the router instead of Teksavvy cable.

Try without the router first & see if that doesn't eliminate the issue. Notice the lights on the modem & see if some turn off. Note which ones & what activities occur.

The cause of your problem is that you have unlimited tek savvy, wich is less premium. It's written on their website.
Just switch to their premium server, you still have 300 gig of bandtwith per month.

I'm currently with Rogers and am thinking of switching to either TekSavvy or Distributel (live in downtown Toronto, Bloor/Bath).
Looking at the TekSavvy Cable 28 (300GB) plan, as I like being on the preferred server and 300GB is enough bandwidth for me. And I like that it's $46.95 flat, no dry loop fee, blah blah.
Any suggestions? Seems some people are 50/50 with TekSavvy, but they sound good to me (for my location).

But dont go with the unlimmited bandwith, choose the 300gig to have premium server.

I don't understand why you would choose the DSL over cable when the cable option doesn't need the dry loop fee and it's the same speed, but for less money.

Teksavvy is definitely the way to go. And btw, there is no routing/quality of service difference between the unlimited or 300GB plan. Like Martin said, there is no "premium" tier any more.

Is it a matter of the ISP Teksavvy is using that has this lax rule that you can go higher if there's no congestion or something?

Anything above the rated 28 Mb/s is just Speedboost

It's a temporary boost and it skews speed test results.

Yes but there is the 7PM - 12AM Peak Hour rate limit @ 14Mbps/1Mbps and the $40/month rate is if you pay for a year upfront + it's only for the first year. They charge you the entire years cost in the second year at the regular rate.

I found TekSavvy to be rude, unprofessional and incompetent. They are OK if you are looking for a cut-rate vendor, but god help you if you have any issues.
By the end of my service my internet was going out daily. Every call to customer service took an hour given the call volumes. They'd reset the service but had no idea why they it occurred, and promised follow-ups to resolve the issue never happened. By the end I was calling every day because the service dropped daily - frankly I started tethering to my cellphone phone because I need to get work done and I couldn't afford to spend an hour a day calling their technical lines. In my final call I said that I had been a customer for three years and really wanted to remain a customer but noted that daily interruptions wasn't acceptable. The response was: "Ok, please confirm you want to cancel.", and that was that.
I switched providers, they identified the issue immediately, and I've not looked back.

Depends on the area. Tekksavvy, Distributel and all the like are renting network from Rogers/Bell/Videotron depending on the area so most downtimes are due to the latter 3.

Rogers uses speedboost as everyone was saying. The problem with your ping that has to do with the fact that TekSavvy's servers are in Toronto and not Montreal. If you wanted a local ISP whose equipment is in Montreal with lower ping times you should've gone with Electronic Box.

I don't know how that could be possible though because Bell put in a new Sagem cell pipe modem. My old TP Link had Teksavvy login credentials but that had been powered down and set aside.
Here's my results while downloading albeit slowly some old Raising Hope episodes.

Sounds like your still logging in with your teksavvy login, and getting a teksavvy IP address
My speed test result is ok

I switched providers, they identified the issue immediately, and I've not looked back.
Just curious, what was the issue?

I logged in with my email two days ago and today and noticed that the bandwidth usage is still going up. I have my old tp link dsl modem unplugged so no clue what is happening.
In any case, I sent Teksavvy screen shots of the two days so they can investigate the matter further.
