Would a daily commute from Markham to Peterborough and back be killer? How bad is traffic in the early mornings (like 7am) along 404 south and 401 east?

As an alternate maybe you can avoid 404 and 401 all together? Just go hwy 7 and then hwy 35/115 :?:

I did this a few summers ago, from 404 to 401 to 115, its a tough drive, but once you're off the 401, its mostly clear driving. Just watch your speed, its easy to not pay attention and drive faster than you think!
The only 'killer' thing about this commute is boredom.

You'll be bored to death.. Cruise control and comfy car would be musts.
As mentioned, avoid the crazies on 400s and take 7 across.

404 -> 401 East is bad on most mornings, because all the merge-lane cheaters have taken it to the extreme and use the 401 East exit off the 404 to cheat and merge back again onto the DVP.
Highway 7 is very empty East past 9th line. If you live on the East side of Markham, Hwy 7 should be your obvious choice.
If you're worried about winter driving on rural roads, you can take Brock down to the 401.

If it's a permanent job, you can and maybe should move to Peterborough, then deduct the moving expenses on your tax return. ;)
