Hi,

I got a crack on my windshield while driving on the highway a couple weeks ago. It was small at first and now spread across the windshield horizontally. I have a $500 deductible for windshield replacement from my insurance but I am not sure which automotive shop provides the best service and affordability when replacing a windshield.

Does anyone have experience with windshield replacements and how much they normally cost?

P.S It is a 2008 Toyota Sienna CE if that helps.

Thanks!

i saw good recommendations about speedy gonzalez.. just called him to get a quote on my nissan sentra 2011 and was quoted 240 all in.
not sure if i will get it now though (may wait to see if the cracks get bigger)

btw, it's not worth it to go through the insurance company unless it actually comes out to be more than 500.
though, some companies offer glass repair (at their affiliated shops) without the customers having to pay for the deductibles. so you may want to ask

$240 is really cheap. In November 2011, I had my windshield replaced on my 2010 Ford Ranger. Luckily, it was a $200 deductible for auto glass. I believe that the repair bill was $650-$700. The new windshield, Carlite brand, was only good for a few months...then I got another rock chip (can't even see the chip up close) that later propogated across the bottom of my windshield when I turned on the defrost and it was cold outside....it doesn't interfere with my visibility so I am not having it fixed right now.

Watch out for those Made in China windshields.

Those places always jack up the bill when they know insurance is footing it.

The guy I used was pretty good. He was recommended by the late Ron Tordoff (google him).

The guy is Jonathan Alfred at 416-451-9679. Him and Ron worked together/owned a shop together for 16 years.

He is a mobile service; he will come to your door and replace the windshield in about an hour. Price I think will be roughly like Speedy. Will give you the choice between Chinese vs. brand name glass.

I used this same guy last year (Speedy) came to my house and did installation. Nice funny friendly guy, Brazalian I think he was. Price was reasonable too.

You should be careful I have read that the windshield is a structural component of the car...so its not good to have a cracked one.

Cannot afford to buy a new windshield every few months. Lotsa vehicles in Northern BC have cracked windshields....it's a part of living up north.

Can you please post a link of where you read this. For people that drive on gravel a lot, you dont get them replaced until it either affects your vision or are told to by the cops

I have a huge crack in mine from last April from a chip repair that held on for an entire year. Since its just the lower part, doesnt affect my visions, etc I have left it. Doesnt mean I dont take care of my truck, just something that doesnt bother me. If it takes off and affects my vision I will look into it

Quoted it to be about a $250 fix to replace it, which isnt bad. But now when I get a stone chip I dont care since the windshield is hooped anyway

Cracks are the easy things to deal with, its the huge star hits the size of your hand that suck. I rmember getting one like that and glass actually came inside the cab, it smashed both sides. Scary stuff

Modern, glued-in windshields contribute to the vehicle's rigidity, but the main force for innovation has historically been the need to prevent injury from sharp glass fragments. Almost all nations now require windshields to stay in one piece even if broken, except if pierced by a strong force. Properly installed automobile windshields are also essential to safety; along with the roof of the car, they provide protection to the vehicle's occupants in the case of a roll-over accident.

Op if you check around to the smaller indepent glass replacers you can find a safe windshield at a much lower price than the main glass installers.
