Dear all,
I'm graduate student who is looking for a flexible/semi-flexible job during my studies to supplement my income.
I don't have any previous job experience with data entry; but, I am interested in such a job because I don't want a service job (i.e. waiting tables, barista, etc). Furthermore, I thought it might be only one of the few jobs I can get.
I'm not sure what companies/temp agencies I can approach to find such a position.
Are there any to avoid?
Or am I completely mistaken about this type of job, and instead I should look elsewhere?
Thank you for any guidance you can offer.

data entry is not as easy as you think in terms of stress level because most of the time you are required to produce certain results. for example if you work as a data entry clerk entering cheques you are expected to process a reasonable amount of cheques per hour.
since you're a grad student maybe you should try to find something related to your study even if it pays minimum wage. that's better than getting $12-$13/hr doing data entry IMO.

i agree, get a job that is related to your education. I know alot of people who went out of their way just to earn a couple of dollars but ended up staying in that field and forgot what they wanted to become. a friend of mine who is doing data entry and he is now seriously going thin up there because of stress. at the end of the day he loves his work so i guess it works out for him.

Thanks for the enlightenment. The added stress is not welcome. Grad school is stressful enough and I need all the mental energy I need to focus on my studies.
Unless anyone has any overwhelming evidence to the contrary, I think two posts against this job has convinced me to consider something else.
Tutoring might be a consideration, but finding students and consistent clients is not easy. Well nothing is easy--and that is why they call it a job!

nope. there's no evidence of the contrary. data entry is way too stressful. i worked that position back in 2008, would of last a year and beyond but i couldn't take the added stress, not from the workload but from other coworkers that were starting to break down
