I have a Sears two speed, variable humidity dehumidifier I bought maybe 4 years ago and the rear coils are no longer cold and have noticed it doesn't dehumidify anymore. If memory serves me right they contain freon so I can only assume, it may have a leak or low on freon. The fan works but the compressor doesn't seem to kick in and the evaporator coils on the rear don't get cold. I can also only assume it's R-134a which I have lots of including gauges etc and wonder if it's worth recharging or purchasing a new one. Only reason I ask is it was on sale for around $300.00 and it's only 4 years old. The filter is clean so that's not the issue and the fan blows well.

Anyone have any experience with this before you quickly suggest, "go out and buy a new one, they're only $300.00 to get a high quality replacement"

You can look, but I doubt it has any service ports, those sorts of appliances are usually crimped and soldered after the factory refrigerant charge.
There might be a low/high switch or maybe the compressor became unplugged.... look for the simple stuff first via visual inspection.
