according to this site http://www.care2.com/greenliving/top-ten-houseplants-for-cleaner-air.html i should look for these plants
Areca palm
Reed palm
Dwarf date palm
Boston fern
Janet Craig dracaena
English ivy
Australian sword fern
Peace Lily
Rubber plant
Weeping fig
i am not sure where to buy them in toronto, are there specific places that would have these plants? some suggested locations would help.

The later half of the list you can virtually anywhere that plants are sold - Walmart... Often though Walmart...will have a plant listed as a fern and not necessarily the particular type. But they are common and should be easy to locate.
Specific plants can clean specific air problems too - so if you narrow down the list to better suit your problem you should still not have any shopping problems.

i am looking to clean cigarette smoke. what do you suggest?

Bamboo palm I see mentioned a lot for that purpose. I have no idea how readily available it is...I just know a lot of smokers lol

any other specific places other than walmart? just some names of stores will do.

Try Plant World (http://www.plantworld.net/en/index.php) at 4000 Eglinton near Scarlett. I would bet they have most if not all.

I've heard that bamboo is effective at cleaning the air. I am not talking about the lucky bamboo you find in supermarkets. That's not actually bamboo but some kind of water plant. I don't know exactly which stores sell bamboo plants but I know there is a store on the Danforth in Toronto called Do Bamboo. They sell bamboo clothing but might know where to buy bamboo?
