View Full Version : Where's your favorite seat on the bus?

Let's say you got on an empty (public transit) bus (with driver, of course). Which seat does your first instinct take you? The closest seat? Way in the back? The courtesy seats?
I used to go for the seat that's closest to the rear exit for buses that have those seats facing the isle instead of other seats. They are spacious for 1 person, but slightly cramped for 2, so there is less chance of that space getting filled up first. Recently I started to ride far back, in the corner. I've found that there is more leg room in the back, and I can lean my head against the back wall for a nap.

Hands down, second last single seat on the first floor. Close enough to the door but not so close that I get the wind to the face. If htat's not an option, aisle seat of the tallest row on the back.

In the middle. Up front and the bus driver might be stoned and crash and kill you (http://www.torontosun.com/2011/09/01/ttc-driver-in-fatal-crash-probed-for-pot). Near the back and another stoned bus driver might rear end the bus and kill you.

Closest single seat to the rear doors. No one next to me, quick exit. Bickety bam.

Very back of the bus - window seat on the opposite side of whichever side gets hit directly by the sun...
I like to sit back there with my headphones on, on the way to the station and just look at the window and just think about things......
I like traveling in buses/trains in general....I'm weird that way.....

Too bad http://www.seatguru.com/ (a website for picking apart the most optimal seats on airliners) doesn't cater to public transport either.
Here's a humorous airline complaint by a guy sitting next to the lavatory: http://onemansblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/12/seat29ecomplaint.pdf
For me, I have no idea why the back of the bus was racially segregated in the old days (facetious/light-hearted comment). IDEAL SEATS right there. :D For those buses that have a row of five seats at the very back, seat #1 and #5 have PREMIUM legroom on their respective side by the window. They also seem to be raised higher as well, so on a hot day you can appreciate the wind blowing at your face from the open windows that are situated so high up the bus walls.

I only go on buses on vacation when I am being transported to the car rental facility. I guess I sit at the back just because that is where I sit out of habit.

Not even close! When I was in Chicago in May, if I could have, I would've ridden all day through the loop. :D
I go for whatever gives the most leg room.
Bus: The single seaters on the TTC buses are ideal. Otherwise, back of the bus or the seats facing the aisle.
Subway: Usually the seats at the end of the subway car have extra legroom. I usually prefer sitting and facing the direction of movement.
GO Train: Notorious for little legroom - I aim for the seats facing the aisle as well.
Planes: Fire exit of course :D

In that case, you'd want to avoid window seats and poles so that your head doesn't smack on anything if the inevitable happens.

I love just riding on trains and buses in general, music on - looking out the window at the scenery - it's f'in awesome - for some reason I do some of my best thinking when I'm on either........I'm afraid that when I get older (like senior citizen older) that I might just ride them during the day for fun :S
For me the Bus/subway/Go/Plane falls like this.....
Bus - I've already stated - Subway , usually in the last car of the train, in the last two seater on the opposite side of the door facing the direction of travel
Go - Second floor , first set of seats by the stairs, window seat - Opposite the sun.....
Plane - I usually ask for a window seat towards the front of the plane - I want to be able to get off the plane as quick as possible once it lands - I hate being at the very back.

I try not to lean my head anywhere on public transit. On the subway with the glass panes, you can see where people leave behind their hair grease stains.
Also there are some subway seats that are positioned in a way that makes it easy for people to stretch and rest their dirty shoes on. I avoid those spots if possible. You don't see it, but it definitely happens.

I like sitting in the middle of the bus, near the exit doors, on seats facing the aisle. I know seniors, etc will need to sit in seats in the front of the bus. I can stand up and give my seat to others if the people in the front don't give up their seats. Also, I've seen a guy throw up on someone's shoulders, so this is why I don't want to sit in front of someone where they can throw up on the back of my neck!

I haven't been in a bus for ages, but travel by plane regularly. I usually pick an aisle seat in the exit row. Otherwise, an aisle in business is good. I seldom choose a window unless it's a new destination and there's something worth seeing.
Edit: Re: the TTC, I go for just anything, It's too short to be picky.

Next time you get on the TTC have a napkin or kleenex with you... wipe the spot you're planning to lean your head (especially at the back) and have a friend record your reaction. I've accidentally touched that area with my hand and it came away black! Also ... during the summer? keep the windows closed as opening them reduces the efficiency of the air cooling system, ruining the bus ride for the rest of the passengers. Around 80% of the cold air comes from the back of the bus, and 20% from the windows / ceiling vents. Opening the rear window allows the cold air to escape.

i dont ride the ttc, but i do ride the go bus weekly...I like to sit on the 2nd roll to the opposite of the driver. you get more vertical leg room because there is a slant down to the 1st roll, and you get off early.

Since I'm a pretty tall guy, I hate seats where there's a seat in front of you - You can't stretch your legs or your knees will hit the seat in front of you, so I never take any of those seats with a seat directly in front of you.
Usually take the back seats where they face toward each other. Never in the front because those are courtesy seats :)
Anyone else think the people that take the single file seats come off as introverts? Don't want to sit beside anyone lol

On my way to York (around 10am, from VP/Steeles) I sit on the right side of the bus - this is the 'passenger' side, and allows me to use my phone without turning the display up to 100%. On the way home (around 4-6pm), I sit on the right again, as the sun won't bother me.
I try to get a seat when possible, because of the metal spike in my right foot (small fracture that hasn't healed properly) which sometimes when standing, rubs against the bone/nerve, but I don't demand it unless it's VERY painful, and only ONE TIME since I started going to Seneca@York have I asked a guy to get up, and he willingly did.

When I was in high school, some of us would always sit in the back, it was fun. One of my dbag friends would throw (usually empty) water bottles at people.
But after high school, I found the back of the bus to be annoying and prefer to sit at the rear of the first half. Loud/noisy people always tend to go to the back so that's probably why.

This. I like the fact that not a lot of people go to the back. I dont know why, but I also feel I shouldn't sit in the front in case someone elderly or pregnant needs the seat, even if it's an empty bus. There's usually at least one seat on the back of the bus too during crowded hours.

Yeah, usually when I take the bus it's empty at the back so it's quiet....I agree with the sitting at the frong part....I'd rather leave those seats for them. Most of them when I'm riding the bus I'm going directly to the subway station near by so it's not like I'll be getting off either......I'd rather leave those seats (the ones at the front) for everyone else so that if they need to get off their near a door...

I havent taken a bus since my university days. I only took it then because I got a free bus pass as part of my tuition while the parking pass was too expensive and the parking lots too far away from classes.
Luckily, I'm rich enough to own a personal automobile and don't have to put up with "poor folk" issues like picking a seat on the bus.

I find that on the go buses (mci coaches), the best seats to take are the ones beside the wheelchair lift. they have the most leg room not to mention it is the least bumpy section of the bus. i would never sit at the back especially after the rear axles where most of the bumps are absorbed
