When a tire comes out of nowhere, coming towards me from oncoming traffic, jumping the barrier, bounces 5 feet in front of my car and over my roof!

I look in my rear view mirror and I see the cars behind me swerving left and right to avoid it.

I was driving with my 9 month pregnant wife as my passenger....

lucky you. Hope it didn't touch your roof. People had been killed before by these kinds of thing.

Glad that everyone is safe and hopefully this didn't cause any accidents/injuries..I was driving behind a truck and three tires blew at the same time once. We need more truck safety testing, not sure if this was a truck tire or not.

Something just like that happened in the GTA a few days ago, with the wheel smashing straight into the windscreen of a car right in front of the driver. I'm not sure if he/she survived or not. Anybody know?

BTW OP, come up with a more descriptive title. Yours is a bit too generic.

Count your blessings....

Were the people behind you that were swerving okay?

Glad you were ok OP.

I don't think those companies give a crap about how we die from their flying tires. I hope the government are not stupid enough to accept self inspection for the trucks by their own companies. They really need to charge the trucking companies a lot of money for a federal / provincial inspection centers for all size of trucks. I think currently only trucks that travel cross province(s) are required for inspection. Cube trucks possibly don't test anything.

Shoot, that's the one. Sad to hear the driver died. Just look at the extent of that damage, and that's from an SUV tire. That's a problem with the larger wheels being used these days on all classes of vehicles.

You DO see those truck inspection stops at the sides of highways for big riggs correct? By law they are forced to pull over. They check the haul and tires, etc. Or anything over a % of weight have be checked. And are fined often. When a tire blows on one of those 18 wheelers they have to pull over and make sure everything is okay and call the MTO to get the shreds.

But with alot of these 'new' transport truck drivers they dont care to pull over if a tire blows or wheel comes off. Because they dont give a hoot.

Seen this happen at least twice in the last 2 years. Both times they were spares mounted under the car (think dodge caravans). First time an SUV went over it and jumped up at least 4 feet into the air. Never seen such a thing.

Lucky escape OP.

Thanks for the positive comments. She grabbed her stomach after the incident and looked very uncomfortable, probably from the freak out. She's doing fine though :)

I'm not sure about the other drivers behind me as it was raining like crazy yesterday, and it was starting to get dark when this happened. Driving conditions were far from optimal!

a subaru drove out of the dealership, made
a right turn to southbound, and one of it's wheel fell out and
rolled towards me while i'm drivin' northbound. which is about 50-100m away
from the dealership....saw the wheel rolling towards me, i swerved, and
it still hit the rear-driverside door...

next thing i see is that the imprezza in a quick 2-3 sec period w/o
a rear wheel, and dragging down to his muffler....

woamn and a child in childseat in the car scared to death, and then
2 mechanics from the dealership running out....w/ a torque wrench....

damage to my car was minor body damage, which was dealership paid for....

Scary stuff, glad everyone was ok. It's tough reading stories like these, but it is one of the games you play driving on highways. I never ride beside/behind transports.

Terrifying but it's the truth of the matter.

Companies don't care. They just want to move goods as fast/cheap as possible.

Everyday rocks and crap goes flying on the 401. Because drivers/companies don't tarp their trucks, don't tie down properly or clean their vehicles of debris.

My car has a crap load of dents/chips from stones that fall off of trucks and other drivers run over. I've even seen whole mechanical parts from trucks fly off as they go over bumps.

I'm sure you've all seen random nuts and bolts on the side of the road when you're stuck in traffic. You should be wondering what part was that bolt holding on to.

The OPP/TPS are all too afraid to actually go catch these guys. It is dangerous, how narrow are the lanes near construction sites on the highway they can't hide or pull someone over. (Think about it when was the last time you were pulled over for speeding in a construction zone?). They'd rather set up speed traps in the city during rush hour.

With all the construction going on around the GTA we should be hitting operators with a sledgehammer for the upkeep of their trucks and throwing criminal charges at them when they fail.

I agreed that these flying objects from trucks are deadly.
Something, somehow, should be done and make the highway more safe for everyday driving.

Also, they should ban cars to have spare wheel/tire under the vehicle (like some vans and suv), and on the back of the vehicle.
Ignorant drivers never bother to check/inspect that everything is bolt/tighten properly. These things are atleast 20-30 lbs with tire and inflated. It is as deadly as bullets flying through your window.
