What in tarnation is package total? Is this a common practice of charging extra online?

I paid via Paypal if that makes a differences.

I think it's usually referred to as a "convenience" fee. You should be thankful it's only $1.

What did it say when you looked on their website? It's amazing what you can find when you look on the site in question, rather than asking at a completely unrelated discussion forum. :D I found the answer quite quickly there.

FYI, if you're a Costco member, you could have gotten so much more for only $10 more. (there's no waiting for it to be mailed either since they email you the ticket).

I never get charged a "service fee" and I buy tickets online all the time.

^same here and i get like 50 bonus scene points for ordering online.

i'm guessing it's a paypal (crooked) fee. use a credit card instead.
