I just finished watching homes on homes and I've noticed several times when they build a tiled schluter style shower they seem to commonly install a bathtub spout. Why is this? I cannot logically figure a reason for this unless there is some strange code that requires it under a certain circumstance. Thanks!

I think they call it a toe tester, So you can test the water temp with your foot before turning the shower head on.

This.
Its very common and useful. Unless you like the thrill of jumping in to an extra cold or hot shower :p

Yes you could/would install a toe tester but they're normally more expensive then the standard tub spout, hence the reason they use the spout.
If you have a dog they're a great way to wash them should you decide to use the shower, since you can install them at any height.
If you want to fill a pail
If you want to wash your toes only in case you tend to have smelly feet and can't go a day without a shower.
Some use it to wash only the base of the shower.
There are several other reasons other then to test the water.
If you have a thermostatic shower then the temperture will be exactly what you set it at via the temperture control since there will normally be a temperture setting on the valve trim. At least that's the way it is on the higher end manufactures.
EDIT:
The way I see it it probably cost around $10.00 extra for the piping and it's normally included so why not.
