View Full Version : Raised patio + cold room vent

Looking to do a raised patio, only about 8" tall (1 or 2 layers of retaining wall), but will block the cold room vent. I can extend the vent with PVC piping. Concern is how to deal with the round pipe exiting square cut stones and any issues with aggregate loss or shifting. A vent cover would hold back the aggregate but I'd imaging it would flex over time and cause the area to collapse.

What about blocking off the vent completely? Any code violations? Currently there is fiberglass stuffed in the hole from the cold room side anyways (old owner felt room was too cold in winter?). Room is about 5-7 celcius (guess) in the winter, and useless as a cold room in the summer. However, currently it oly holds store bought canned good, pop, water, and the other junk. No bags of potatoes/carrots/etc.

On a similar note, not that I need a weeping system, but isn't this basically the same? It has to exit the side and is round where the stone is cut square? How is the integrity of this area handled?

Suggestions on how to deal with the vent?

Sorry I'm still having my morning coffee and my brain is only at 25% capacity so bear with me since I know I haven't read your thread enough to give a proper answer.

Cold Cellar:

Depending on how well it's insulated which in my experience they usually aren't, then it needs ventilation since I find they tend to build up on moisture/condensation, mainly in the winter, therefore a vent is helpfull.

If you're concerned about the pvc/abs pipe crushing under load, you can always go to metal/cast iron, but I do believe the plastic is fairly strong and should hold up to the pressure.

One of the reasons for weeping tile is to accomidate drainage for times when there is excessive rain or even when there is a flash cold spell where there maybe the possibility of freezing. In other words, it's helpfull to have proper drainage.

I hope I was somewhat helpful since I'm still half asleep.

Ah.............Coffee!

Concern is not about the integrity of the pipe or the purpose of a weeping system (which I don't need, due to the height of the raised patio).

The concern is the integrity of the exit point of the pipe (I mentioned weeping system because it would need a similar exit, so someone with familiarity on that could assist with my case. I have googled lots of info and videos and there is no mention of how to treat the exit point of a weeping system). The pipe will be round, the opening for the exit point I make on the stone on the will be straight (square), leaving space. A vent cover will provide the decorative covering (I'm thinking adhered with contractor's adhesive) but not provide much structural support for the pressure of any aggregate pushing against it through the space.

I have seen too many raised walls (especially made into stairs) that are collapsed and I want to do this right, even if its just a 1 or 2 level raised patio (1 level being buried).

How to deal with the space? Is it even a concern?

I just came up with this....Use 3/4 crushed gravel around the opening that would be bigger than the space, thus no issues? That sounds like the best solution (I can think of).
