View Full Version : Is a 64GB iPad 3 for $350 even possible?

I contacted someone over Craigslist who claims to be a wholesaler that can sell me the 64GB iPad 3 for $350. I know, I know. I fall into the "if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is" camp, so I stated that I would not be able to send money in advance. The counter-offer was for me to send money via Western Union to the UK to a receiver name of my choice. I would provide the MTCN# and sender's name, then release the receiver's name once I was satisfied with the product received.
Still makes me nervous, though. As much as I'd love to trust an anonymous stranger with a great bargain, I'm not sure that I'd be able to pull that money back if I needed to. I'd be crazy not to send money AFTER receiving it, as I'd probably buy a load of them at that price, but I know that's asking a lot of the seller.

Thoughts? Wait...*putting on flame retardant suit*... okay, thoughts?

Yes because any wholesaler who has access to ipad3s for below $350 is willing to sell to you + free shipping instead of selling the ipads at retail. Obviously ipads are not selling well at retail prices so they need to give it to you @ more than half the price.

This makes perfect sense. Send the money.

Just some simple research would show you why this is a scam for dumb people:

http://www.isuppli.com/Teardowns/News/pages/New-iPad-32-GB-4G-Carries-364-35-Bill-of-Materials.aspx

The new iPad, equipped with 32 Gigabytes (GB) of NAND flash memory and 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) wireless capability, carries a bill of materials (BOM) of $364.35. When the $10.75 manufacturing costs are added in, the cost to produce the new iPad rises to $375.10. The BOM of the 16GB 4G LTE version amounts to $347.55, and the 64GB version is estimated at $397.95.

ISuppli's cost estimate does not include packaging or overhead costs like design, marketing and software.

So basically this "wholesaler" is selling it to you below cost with free shipping. What do you think???

This is a scam for sure.

Here is what you can do. I was able to pretty much get the scammer (from my own experience) to take down their website by doing this.

Actually proceed with the Western Union Transfer. Gather the details of the person whom is 'picking up'. Try get 'address information'.

Eventually only send $1 (if your ok losing a dollar). Ensure you select that the person is required to present ID etc.

Obtain that information then publicly post it on a website informing all others of this person.
