I went online to buy tickets for Prometheus and was surprised to see you could pick your seating. I saw Mission Impossible back in December at their IMAX screen and there was no such thing as reserved seating.
Is this recent? Or did they just make a mistake on the website?

Its been this way in Ottawa for at least 18 months. Ultra AVX and Imax both do it now.

I noticed this when we went to the avengers.
The drawbacks:
1) They seem to sit you right next to other people. IE the reseveration system doesn't like to leave gaps in the seats. It makes sense for busy first weekend evening shows, but not so much for matinees or when a movie has been out for a few weeks
2) You still can't use the admit one coupons online. So you still have to pick your seats at the venue. Which would be before the show so after everyone else has already made their reservations.

What do you mean the reservation system doesn't like it? You pick the seats don't you? Pick seats that aren't next to people.

The online reservation shows you which seats are taken and which aren't so if you want to sit next to someone you pick the seats directly beside. I reserved seating for Avengers at Richmond Hill UltraAVX recently and I believe on the site it either suggests/or doesn't allow you to leave a one seat gap but two is fine. I picked two seats basically in the middle of the theater. The entire row was empty when I booked a day before but had people sitting on both sides by the time the movie started even though the theater was only 25% full. Had reservations not been in place I'm sure the people on both left and right of us would have left a one seat gap.
So it certainly has it's good and bad points.

I still don't understand. People are free to choose whatever seats they like. If they wanted a seat with a one-seat buffer from you, they would have chosen it. The problem is with the people who chose to sit right next to you, not the reservation system. Of course the reservation system is going to maximize the space in the theatre even though it's empty, but it's on the user to pick a different seat other than the one suggested.

No the reservation system won't allow a one seat buffer. It has to be two seats minimum between taken seats and where you want to sit. That being said the people chose not to put that buffer and sat beside you. What doesn't make sense is in a 3/4 empty theatre why they didn't move over a bit after the movie started.

Haven't been to the Scotiabank theatre imax, but I went to Colossus earlier tonight. They got reserved seating now too and the seats have been changed to ones similar to avx seating with the tilting seats (minus the space...rows are still tight like before). The last movie I saw there was also Ghost Protocol and first noticed reserved seating for The Avengers. I just watched Prometheus there and the 3D and visuals looked stunning on IMAX, did they update the system or was the movie just made nicely?
Can't wait to see The Dark Night Rises in IMAX, the trailer looked amazing!

It was filmed in 3D, but not with IMAX cameras. The only Hollywood movies to be partially filmed in IMAX are The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, Transformers: ROTF, and Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol.

Im sure there are way more than those, they film like 5 - 10 minutes of every big action movie in Imax. Movie websites keep track of it.

That is absolutely not true. Other than the films mentioned no other films are SHOT in IMAX (even small portions) as opposed to being upconverted to fit the screen.

Take seat by force or call the manager. The key is to shame them real good and make a scene. You paid extra for the privilege of sitting in a specific seat and should not lay down and take that kind of disrespect.

LoL precisely. This is the one time "movie hoppers" won't get away with it (depending on how packed the movie is)

Yes, websites do track it, like this one (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMAX#Feature_films_partially_shot_on_IMAX_cameras) . And you would be completely wrong. The movies I listed are the only ones partially filmed in IMAX. The next one after The Dark Knight Rises will be Star Trek 2 next summer.

This sort of happened to the row in front of me at Prometheus on the weekend. Two people were sitting in front of me and a couple minutes before the screening started, the actual people who reserved those seats showed up. The two people left without any complaint and headed back to their own lesser seats.

It seems you are correct. I'm a bit surprised, I thought a lot more stuff was filmed with IMAX cameras, but it isn't which means most IMAX films aren't REALLY IMAX. I guess you just read about christopher nolan a lot when it comes to IMAX.

yes its a small list but i like paying to see imax when there were actual imax cameras involved in the production...i could care less about 3d movies...

So what is the verdict on the Scotiabank IMAX? I've saved up my Scene points to go to my first IMAX movie (Dark Knight Rises) and just want to know if I should expect a fairly good experience. Is this the "fake" IMAX I've been hearing all about? Or is it legit?

I'm not sure they'd be kicked out completely. I think they'd more likely just be told to go to whatever seat they bought. I remember when I saw that last Transformers movie, there was an old couple in our seats and when they moved it turned out they had bought tickets in the front row. Felt a little bad for them, but only a little.

This has happened to me on several ocassions at the Richmond Hill UltraAVX, the first time it happened(when UltraAVX first started), the people in our seats wouldn't move, so we just went out and let someone working there know, they came back, checked their tickets and they were asked to move. The other couple times it happened, the people just kindly moved when we showed them our tickets. It makes no sense for the people to not move in the first place, they obviously don't have that seat so it only makes it worse if management has to come and ridicule them
FYI, Dark Knight Rises advanced tickets have begun and they're going fairly quick, just bought my tickets, better get yours before all the good reserved seats are gone!

My guess is a lot of those cases people just bought tickets at the box office and had no idea there was reserved seating available. They just assumed seating was first come first serve like usual.
Either way, doesn't matter, your ticket has your seat number on it. Either they move or you let management make them move.

And that's pretty much impossible because when you buy @ the box office and it's a reserved seating show, the CSR shows you the LCD screen and asks you to select your seats.

IT should be amazing. This is one of the few legit 70mm IMAX screens in Ontario and with TDK with over 1 hours worth of REAL IMAX FILM to boot. This should be one to remember, unless some *******s are sitting around you. The screen is huge, sound is great and the movie is TDK. I saw Batman Begins when it was given the IMAX conversion and i loved that experience. So even the non imax film scenes should look amazing during your viewing.

I've always found the Scotia IMAX to have really bad sound bleed from the theatres next to it (and vice versa). I hope they've corrected that.

Just don't be surprised by some gunplay in the parking lot afterwards.
I'd stick with the manager strategy if they really are "*********".

I was mostly joking about taking the seat by force, but not the making a scene part.

According to this list, the Scotiabank IMAX will be the only theatre in the GTA (and 1 of only 6 in all of Canada) that will show The Dark Knight Rises in 70mm.

Interesting list. Correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't the Coliseum in Mississauga have a 70mm imax projector? I watched TDKR prologue there attached to mission impossible. I live in Mississauga, and I hope this theatre is included in the list. There is no way they wouldn't show it there.
To anyone who hasn't experience true 70mm imax, try your hardest to see this movie in imax. It will MELT YOUR EYES!!! :)
