Hey guys

I just picked up a 2008 honda civic sedan and I'm thinking of installing some HID headlights. I know that currently there are two sets of bulbs for high and low beams (9005 and 9006), Does anyone know how this will affect installation of the HID kit? Also does anyone know any reputable places where I can purchase them as well as have them installed. I'm located in Scarborough, but don't mind driving a bit to get them done properly. Also can anybody advise of the legality of these HIDs? Thnx.

Not sure about legality, but unless you regularly drive in poorly lit areas at night (e.g. country roads), you've got no business installing HIDs. People will pull behind you and beam your ***** off the road. I KNOW I WOULD LOL.

If you're looking for qaulity one, you might want to try MTEC.

HIDs are supposed to be installed in a projector housing. Or in some cases they can be installed using a proper reflector that is designed to work with HID bulbs. The reflector in halogen lights is only designed to reflect light coming from a halogen bulb.

If you want HIDs in your car then buy a whole new headlight housing that has projectors in them. If that isn't available then do a projector retrofit. This requires more experience and skill. If you do manage to do a retrofit DO NOT FORGET to properly aim your headlights.

This might cost more and require more time, but other drivers wont hate you, because your HIDs wont be blinding anyone.

You can do a retrofit. Costs should be around $500-1000.

Try xenon depot in thornhill. 9006 is the low beam, you could change that to hid. 9005 is the high beam, leave that alone.

If you want to do something really cheap and easy, convert the 9006 bulbs to 9005. There are many YouTube videos and webpages with instructions. It costs about $25, takes 10 mins and doubles the light output with none of the headaches associated with hid. The downside is bulb life is shorter

For around the same price as these HID kits, get 9012 Philips HIR's instead. Just a few small nips to remove some plastic and you will have great light output without the massive glare putting an HID will output in your housings.

i'll have a look at the 9012 Philips HIR's. How's the durability of these? I don't want ghetto HIDs lol. If i get it done, would like it done properly lol. The main reason I want it is because I do quite a bit of driving(>1000kms/week for work) and really don't like the stock lights. Another other whiter and brighter alternatives to HIDs? In addition to the better visibility i do like the look of whiter lights.

Just for the looks buy sylvania bulbs, they are brighter and white. But honestly you don't need HID unless you feel like you need brighter lights such as driving in complete darkness all the time.

9012 is better than 9006, but not as bright as 9005.

9012 ($60/pair) is more expensive than 9005 ($25/pair), but has longer life

Please do all of us a favour and make sure after you install the HIDs, get them positioned correctly.

I'm still contemplating, but if i do decide to put them in, Im thinking of getting the entire projector housing as well, and getting them positioned correctly. I know how annoying it can be when people with HIDs have lights not properly positioned. Does anyone know where I can do the full conversion, including the projector housing , parts and labour? Thnx again for all the input guys, much appreciated.

parts (projectors, ballasts, bulbs, shroud, wiring) & labour for retrofit should be about $700.

HID conversions are illegal, including "doing it properly and getting projectors". The only way they would be legal is if they were a factory option on your make, model and trim line of vehicle.

Even doing it with projectors is illegal and you open yourself to problems. Aftermarket quality is spotty and you don't want to end up on a dark road somewhere with lights that don't turn on, or worse, catch fire.

I wish automakers were required to include better lights on their cars. I just had a brand new loaner car with reflector low beams and they were quite poor compared to my halogen projector lights. If there was a higher standard for automotive lighting, people wouldn't feel the need to do HID installs.

I've never been able to find any Ontario laws or regulations banning hid conversion.

Ontario auto lighting laws are aiming/performance based, so hid conversion seems 100% legal as long as you meet the aiming and performance criteria set in the regulations.

There are a handful of places like Manitoba where it is explicitly illegal.

For proper projector conversions, there are now diy mini projectors that simply mount in the hole left by the old lightbulb. No hassles with cutting up stock housings, custom projector mounts and initial alignment/ aiming associated with the old days.

These drop in projectors have pretty decent performance and they are cheap.

Thanks to all those who gave helpful advice. Still didn't decide yet, but I appreciate the helpful comments. I agree that if they had better stock lights there would be no need for this. Anywho thanks again guys, much appreciated. I'm still considering my options. To all the rest with nothing useful to say..some advice for you, it is better to let ppl think you're an idiot than to open your mouth and remove all doubt. In other words, if you have nothing useful to offer, do the world a favour and keep your trap shut.

hids arent a big issue. it's the people who drive with highbeams that are annoying

Aftermarket hid conversion is legal, but you still have to meet the Ontario performance and aiming regulations which are pretty strict.

I doubt a hid kit just dropped into a stock halogen reflector can be setup to meet the grade without some serious mods, but a hid projector should be able to.

Also, that generation of civic had some pretty poor stock head lamps so i can see why the op wants hid. That being said, hid in a 9006 housing from that civic generation generally doesn't look that bad compared to say 9004 or 9007

I would try the 9005 conversion first though as its quick, cheap and 100% reversible as well as compatible with the stock wiring harness, then go from there.

Btw, the 300 candella rule means that you are allowed up to 4 lamps that *exceed* 300 candella, not that the 4 lamps are limited to 300 candella

Interestingly, the CSX iTech has HIDs without projectors - stock.

Not sure how they pulled that off. I guess it does not blind everyone.

lots of HIDs come with reflectors. the difference is there are HID projectors, halogen projectors, HID reflectors, and halogen reflectors. is300 has HIDs in reflectors oem also

Forget the Ontario HTA, headlights are covered under the federal "Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards" and there are a lot of requirements that need to be met before an HID conversion could be considered legal.

I think the early 2000s TLs and CLs also have HID reflectors.
The CSX I drove actually puts out a decent amount of usable light on the ground, who needs projectors lol.

I'll take your word for it that some cars come with HIDs in reflector housings. As long as the beam spread, pattern, intensity, etc... is compliant with the federal standards, then they're allowed.

I suspect that auto makers typically choose projector housings as they allow for much better beam control and thus make it easier to comply with the standards.

Federal law (CMVSS 108) only covers *new* cars sold or any car being imported into Canada.

Once the car has been sold/ imported, the owner may do whatever he wishes as long as he complies with the applicable provincial laws were the car is plated.

Many provinces have HTA regulations that explicitly state that lighting must comply with CMVSS 108, however Ontario's HTA does not. The Ontario HTA regulations have some very specific performance and aiming rules
