View Full Version : What would you do if a hobo stole your chicken?

So I was in Seoul last summer and my gf, her sister and I went to KFC for lunch. The order came and we took it to eat on the patio outside. Minutes later a scruffy looking hobo walks in and comes beside our table. At that point the girls were already terrified (apparently hobos are known to be crazy and dangerous in Korea). The hobo began to ramble/speak but we couldn't understand what he was saying, then he started speaking decent English. He was just asking us random questions and we didn't know what he wanted so we tried asking him to leave nicely. Suddenly he reached out his hand and grabbed a drumstick and proceeded to put it in his pocket and started walking out. We were shocked at that point and didn't know what to do. I mean the entire basket of food was ruined (fries and other pieces of chicken) because he touched them and there's no point chasing him down (we wouldn't eat the chicken even if he gave it back to us). Finally, an employee came and apologized to us for the incident and gave us new food and that was it.

What would you have done in my situation?

He took once piece but rendered the rest of the meal inedible. So you would just not eat lunch or shell out more money and buy a new meal and consider yourself unlucky?

I'd let it go.
He must have been pretty desperate/hungry.

Despite their bad situation in life, most homeless people don't steal. So if he did he must have been pretty damn hungry.
I probably would have given him the rest of the meal if he was going to be that desperate and grabby. lol

I work with these types of people. So maybe my answer is biased. I'm sure most would wanna beat him up or throw the rest of the food at him etc...

I agree - if it was in a public restaurant too with all the witnesses getting another meal shouldn't be too difficult....

This story reminds me of all the homeless that roam Toronto restaurants harassing patrons for donations for their sign language 'instruction pamphlet'

Its the manager's responsibility to kick these people out. what do they do? Nothing!...they let them roam from table to table harassing their customers. Very beta behavior.

Ohhhh. I hate these types of beggars! Taking advantage of people with legit impairments.
A friend of mine knows ASL and decided to sign with one. BUSTED.

A real deaf person wouldn't do such a thing. They have their own culture and community... They hate to be looked down upon, and going around begging for money using the 'im deaf card' would probably be degrading to most people with hearing impairment. They don't even see it as a disability, just a different way of life.

Happens all the time at the Burger King at College/Spadina. I've been solicited quite a few times already but I always refuse and he just leaves.

I wasn't upset then and I'm not upset now. I'm just wondering if there's a better way to handle it and I'm asking people what they would have done.

Are you asking if you should have confronted and tried to reason with a hungry insane homeless person?

Or if you should have formed a mob and lynched him for touching your Chicken?

The real story is that you publicly admitted to eating at KFC with your family while on vacation.... you monster...

You are incapable of figuring this out on your own?

Your meal was replaced. What else are you expecting as an answer on what you should have done?

Maybe asking what could have been done after was a bad choice of words. What I meant to ask was what could have been done during the whole ordeal because it lasted quite a few minutes before he left. The outcome could have been very different then.

It's not really about the chicken. It's about how to handle unexpected situations that could potentially be dangerous. In my case, I was passive and didn't go for any confrontation, I didn't get the employees involved either and I came out okay, but I'm sure not everyone would have done the same thing as me. I don't know why you guys keep focusing on the chicken.

In this situation there is no real loss...so I don't think most people would do anything.

Change the chicken to...your mom's purse and then I bet you get a totally different reaction.

Be grateful that he only stole your chicken.

As for what to do...stay positive. Your family is on vacation. The best thing you can do is to help yourself and your family to try to enjoy the rest of the vacation.

It's pretty obvious that when you spoke to this homeless man you said:

"Please Leave"

What he heard was:

"Praise reef"

He was probably confused, but as he is homeless, he has been introduced to various drugs over the years ....

Your words reminded him about the feeling of being on marijuana (sometimes called reefer) and he got the munchies.

He took your chicken because he was extremely hungry ..... because of the memories of the drug. If you don't know what I am talking about, no way that I can explain it to you.

Thus your shameful experience with a homeless man was caused by the inability of Oriental people to pronounce "L" in the English language properly.

Of course, if I or anyone else tried to speak a different language that was not our native tongue, we would surely confuse people as well.

So, the OP scared the homeless man when he spoke English. What needs to be done is to take courses to change a speaking problem. What happens though is the OP believes that all homeless people steal chicken. Or that it is a problem to be analyzed.

I don't think this is against forum rules because it is a fact of speaking a language different to what you grew up with. If I spoke Korean, Mandarin, Tamil or whatever, I am sure that I would also have a speech impediment. If it caused me to scare a homeless man into stealing my chicken I would also say that he is crazy and that my speaking inabilities had nothing to do with it as well. So, this was not a racist post.

(Hey!!! Don't press that Triangle shaped Button!)

TL;DR Version: Something, Something, Something ..... I like to Offend people. I didn't mean it.

Am I the only one impressed by the Hobo because he was bilingual???

Jun 12th, 2012, 06:09 PM
Most hobos have dogs so, follow the hobo to his "place", kidnap/kill his dog, bring dog back to KFC, ask them to cook it for you and eat it. Since you were in Korea, the "chicken" you thought you were originally having was probably dog meat anyway.

-Did this solve your problem? If yes, press #1. If no, please contact your area's Hobo Hotline at 1-888-HOBO

He mind was probably totally scrambled and was unable to communicate. He probably meant well.

He needed the chicken more than you. Feel good that you were a good person and the guy enjoyed the chicken. You can get more chicken and he can't right?
Next time it happens buy the guy lunch for good karma

You are fine.
