View Full Version : Double Eye Lid Surgery Gone Wrong

A friend of a friend always wanted to get a double eye lid surgery. She knew aquaintances who went to Korea to get the surgery done for like $4,000 including flight a few years back. Everything went well. But she didn't know anyone from Korea and didn't want to travel that far out. She found a local doctor who performed this surgery for $4,000. He totally screwed up. Her lids were suppose to flip up to cover the stitches... that did not happen to both her eye lids. Now she's permanantly scared, her lids showing the stitches outright. She can't even sue him cuz she signed a waiver. Now, she's out of $4k for a botched job with scaring on her face. To fix the problem, she has to fork out another $10k.
For cosmetic surgery, you need to be really careful who you're dealing with.. ever had bad experiences?

She went to a Toronto doctor and did the eyelid surgery
Afterwards, she was very happy with the results
Her white friend looked at her

Sorry about your friend OP. I don't get why women do this to themselves. My aunt got the double eyelid surgery. It was done right and proper, but it just looks so strange on her face. This was ten years ago, now her eyes are all droopy and it looks so bad. If I were in this situation, I think I'd rather stick with eyelid tape. At least then you can take it off at the end of the night and you look natural at home.

What's wrong with liability waivers? Isn't that standard with any cosmetic surgery? How can one guarantee that a cosmetic surgery will go smoothly when everyone's body reacts and heals differently?

My cousin had it done. The wound looks really bad at first but eventually it heals.
She had to have the procedure done 3 times because it kept healing to look like normal. It finally stuck on the third time with no problems. She only paid for the initial surgery but she had the surgery done through her friend's brother, who is plastic surgeon.

Here is my take on this double eye lid surgery issue. For the OP's friend, she is out 14k just to go back to normal plus opportunity to invest that money. She also learnt her lesson in life just like everyone else, just in a different way.
It's beyonds me why people love doing this. I think if I were single eye lids I wouldn't care. My girls friends have single eye lids, but it doesn't look at that bad. Usually non asians would not even notice the different. Mostly Korean are obsessed with these surgeries. You are who you are, why bother making something fake to replace something real. At least the plastic surgeons / fake surgeons are getting rich on this. Just like those non license lipid suction cases in asia, where the patients almost die because person operating is not even qualified to do the work.
In a scenario where the husband is double, and his wife is double. Then the kids end up having singles, means the wife has surgery done. It will end up pretty bad that the wife deceived the husband about this. I remember seeing a picture on RFD about this topic where the kids were super ugly, but the parents were both super good looking (super plastic surgeries done, LoL).

No, if you lost some weight that would go away. Not trying to be a ***** .
I had no idea this surgery existed, so I looked at google images and the people that got them done do look way better after having them done. That being said, you shouldn't EVER look for the cheapest deal on surgery.

I'm not a lawyer or a doctor but I do know someone whose nose job went wrong because of negligence on the part of the doctor and the lawyer she spoke to said she could expect 1000$ per inch of scar. This was in Quebec and my friend decided not to sue as she was already incredibly stressed because of the scar right in the middle of her face. The lawyer also explained that no waiver in the world can invalidate someones responsibility towards negligence or malpractice or any other law.

This is not a rude reply, the fascination with large foreheads is getting to be problematic.
Large foreheads used to indicate a person was feeble minded.

I'm not making things up. It is $4k from what I heard, yes it seems like a lot of money for a surgery like that.
For a boob job, it's like $8k. A friend sister had it done recently. Now that's a more complicated surgery!!!

I am pretty sure that you are protected in one way or another even if you sign a liability waiver. Just because you signed something doesn't mean they can go completely apeshit on your face while you're asleep. There is a reasonable expectation on the surgeon that he can be held accountable for. Lawyer up.

Sorry OP your friend is going through this :( I don't understand the need to be different than what you've been given but I do know why they do it. If you don't like it then use the eyelid tape like ebonyrose suggested. At least you'll know that crap like this cannot happen. If she just had her surgery I don't think it's good to constantly cry even if she's crying inside. If she's single, I'm sure she'll find a man that will love her for her vs a version that society expects her to be. If she has a boyfriend/husband then tell that man to go woo the crap out of her and make her feel like the most beautiful woman in the face of the planet! :D
As to suing, yeah I would lawyer up and sue the crap out of that doctor (if it's in Canada).

After years of oppression.
Having the media constantly tell us that 'white is beautiful' and that 'asian is nerdy and ugly'.
Even early Canada before the 1960's had racism built right into its institutions.
Theres also the lack of representation in the media by NON-Stereotypical asians. The only asians you really see on TV are kung fu masters, nerds, asian news woman, etc...
Asians make up about 4-5% of the US population, and roughly the same in Canada. Yet the representation of them in the Media is much lower. ITs almost like a white centric media.

Well I have single eyelids and I was given the option to undergo this surgery when I was 13. I declined because at the time it meant a lot to me to want to find a guy who would love me the way I am. As I got older I also agree with EbonyRose; that often the features one has suits the rest of you. Never used tape and do not want to. My eyes are not big but the rest of my facial bones and proportions are balanced to match - changing the eyes would distort it all. Maybe it is just me but bigger is not always better and I believe this applies to eyes, too. There are beautiful big eyes but there are also bulging googly eyes that I would never trade mine for.

Have you spoken to a lawyer? Waiver don't mean much, a single piece of paper can't predict every scenario that can go wrong. A trained lawyer can find loopholes in any waiver. Waivers can make it difficult for consumers to sue, but not impossible.

It's kinda disturbing when you think about it; but the results (done right) are spectacular.
Pre-surgery, single eyelid eyes are swollen and seem tired. Eyes are so much bigger and brighter after the surgery.
I never really thought about it till I started paying attention.

No offense, but I think asian males might get this more than asian women...and you have to admit, the "nerdy" thing is somewhat promoted by a lot of asians themselves as its "encouraged" by their families.

It's hilarious what people do in the name of vanity - but I also understand - some people's self esteem or I should say most peoples self esteem is tied into their appearance - it's how were programmed to think and feel about our self from a young age.
It's sad when cases like the OP happen - but then again - you get what you pay for.

I don't think the OP's friend was trying to be cheap. She paid $4,000, which is the amount that she would have paid had she gone to Korea. The only problem is that she did it here, where the surgeon probably did not have enough experience doing such a procedure. If this is indeed a very popular procedure back in Korea, then the surgeons there have got alot of experience, which means that she had a higher probability of a better outcome if she went there.
I don't think it would be easy for her to get suitable compensation through the Canadian court system. Lawyer fees alone would end up costing more than $4K. She should save up, and use alot of eyeshadow to cover up her scars. Once she has saved up enough, go to Korea, and get an experienced surgeon to repair the job.

There are also the collagen lip injections and butt implants... the list goes on... doesn't necessarily mean one race holds a monopoly on a specific feature and that when individuals of another race opts for a cosmetic procedure, that they are necessarily doing it to look like the supposed racial prototype.

I am so sick of the completely false rhetoric that double eyelid is a "western" facial feature. It's simply not true.
Western and Asian double eyelids are different. (i.e. the distance between each eyelid) Asians who go through the procedure usually want to make it as natural as possible and not to look more "western, contrary to what some elitists claim.

“There is no such thing as a board-certified plastic surgeon in Canada; that is an American term,” the report stated. “In Canada, one is certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons . . . as a surgical specialist, or one is not.”
I hope your friend didn't go to him.
Anyhow, the surgery might be fixable.. Best bet is probably to get consultation in korea...

same reason why people get tattoos, boobjobs, hair translplant, teeth whitening, exercise, etc.
to feel better about themselves, more confidence.you're comparing exercising to changing your appearance to cutting your eye lids open?
there is a fine line between bettering yourself, and doing it wrong
like looking orange
which by the way i prefer natural breast
dont be a frankenstein, and you get what you deserve if the surgery goes wrong
