VANCOUVER Koi Fish and Great White Shark Coin Group Buy

UPDATE: Tues, Aug 14

Running into issues trying to get our package fully insured and shipped. Most carriers will not insure shipments containing coins so we need to look into 3rd party insurance. Looks like we'll go with FedEx + U-PIC insurance. U-PIC has confirmed that they WILL insure collectible coins.

See updates on page 4 of this thread:

http://forums.redflagdeals.com/no-more-new-orders-koi-shark-coin-group-buy-vancouver-1189409/4/

UPDATE: Fri, Aug 3

Koi coins have been received by DWS in Toronto. We were originally going to wait for the Sharks and have them sent in 1 shipment, but we may get them shipped to Vancouver separately due to insurance limitations, max Canada Post package size restrictions, and Shark production delays.

Costs to be finalized.

See this post for details:

UPDATE: Thu, June 21

Looks like the final tally is 28 sharks and 38 kois, for a total of 66 coins.
The group deposit will be sent to DWS tomorrow morning.

UPDATE: Mon, June 18

For GVR members that want to get in on the group shipment of the Koi and Shark coins to Vancouver, here are the details:

Costs:

Shark cost: $xxx CAD per coin (excluding shared shipping cost to Vancouver)
Koi cost: $xxx CAD per coin (excluding shared shipping cost to Vancouver)

From the main thread: http://forums.redflagdeals.com/taking-orders-deposits-koi-fish-great-white-shark-coin-group-buy-1173844/16/#post14904237

Deposits and Payments:

Confirmation and deposits are due by Thursday June 21, 2012 10pm Pacific Time.
Please PM me for deposit details via Email Money Transfer.
A $75 CAD per coin deposit will be required for each coin you'd like to reserve as DWS needs to cover the payment to the NZ Mint.
If you can provide a deposit for the full amount of each coin you want to reserve, DWS would be most appreciative.
The exact remainder will be due at a later date (based on when DWS requests the remainder).

Shipment and Pickup in Vancouver:

Expected shipping dates from the NZ mint for the Shark and Koi are around the end of July.
NZ mint will ship to DWS. When DWS receives the shipment, he will ship the Vancouver group order to me.
Shipment cost to be determined and all those participating in the group shipment will have their share allocated based on # of coins purchased. This amount will be included into the remainder and due at a later date. Your share of the shipping cost should be no more than an additional couple of bucks per coin at most.
Pickup dates and details to be posted.
switch will arrange 2 or 3 pickup dates in Downtown Vancouver and Burnaby.
lofony will be helping to setup a Richmond pickup date.

If you are in Vancouver and do not want to participate in the group shipment, please provide your deposit directly to DWS and make shipping arrangements directly with DWS.

UPDATE: Sat, June 16

deal_with_singh has kindly offered to take orders for RFDers and will submit a large order to try to get dealer rates. We're trying to hit 300 of each coin in total to get a better discount (approx 2 or 3$ lower?), so that's our goal! I'm sure Vancouver RFDers will make up a healthy portion of this order.

I am taking orders and will take deposits that I will send to deal_with_singh to secure orders for the Vancouver contingent.

Once orders are submitted, payments are all sorted out, and the coins are received, I will make arrangements for pickup of the coins in Vancouver.

I'll update this original post as we go and confirm everyone's orders.

Looks like we're currently sitting at 19 sharks and 42 kois.

I'll work with deal_with_singh to see if we can secure an allocation of 25 sharks and 50 kois for the Vancouver group we have so far and anyone else that may be interested. DWS told me that he'll secure exact numbers. So the # we order is the number we'll get! Get your orders in and let me know how many you're interested in.

If anyone else is interested and wants more.. or significantly more.. let me know so I can inform Singh and revise the Vancouver numbers if needed.

I think we had just under 75 coins total in original interest. Some orders increased, some decreased, and only 2 people who were originally interested changed their minds and are passing on the shark and koi. Everyone else confirmed and submitted their deposits promptly.

Let's see the GTA numbers at the end of the day tomorrow!.. I'm sure there'll be a strong showing.

Hat's off to DWS for coordinating all of this from Koi/Shark HQ in Toronto.. It's a lot of work just to coordinate the small Vancouver group..

I can't imagine how many hours of work DWS is putting into emailing New Zealand, responding to PMs/emails, and playing with spreadsheets.

All deposits have finally been all sent to DWS. Had to send them in 3 installments due to EMT send/receive limits. Sent a total of $5676.00 CAD (everyone's deposits) to DWS.

Any remainder will be owed later.. (kiwong630 and 1226).

Also, shipping will be calculated and split. I expect it to be no more than $2-3/coin depending on the method used. Either Canada Post or UPS.. DWS has found a few shipping methods, but we'll see how much the box will weigh and I'm looking to get the shipment fully insured as well.

And so we wait!..

Please add $1 per coin you have ordered.

Hi ******,

We are still waiting on the packaging to be completed and delivered to our warehouse.

I’m unable to reduce this pricings – in fact I have made an error in my pricing on the Shark but will supply these at our agreed price.

The reason for this are the dies and strike cost to produce this particular coin.

I have also given you our best price on the Feng Shui coin.

Freight cost for your order will be US$1,630.00

I will email you an invoice which will include our bank details – you will need to deposit this into our account before we ship the product.

Hey guys! GOOD NEWS!!!

The Koi were shipped out to me on July 24th! The guy I'm dealing with was forwarded the email about the shipment but either I didn't get it or he forgot to forward it on to me until now!

Either way...I got the email today with a tracking number, and FEDEX Says it will arrive July 30th by 5pm. Typically this means it will arrive 2 days after this day due to customs paper work (happens every time)

Now...I'm going to leave this up to you guys outside of the GTA to decide if you want the Koi's and Sharks shipped together or if you want the Koi's shipped now I don;t mind either as the email I got mentioned that the shark shipping date is still unknown due to issues.

Alright! So NZ Mint has shipped the Kois out to DWS.

Do you guys want him to ship it separately? Or can everyone wait a couple of weeks and have both the Kois and Sharks shipped out together? This would probably save on shipping and having to arrange separate pick ups for the koi and sharks. Only issue is that we don't know when the Sharks will arrive..

Any urgency in needing the Kois ASAP? Or would everyone be able to wait until the sharks come in as well?

TLDR - Kois may come early. Pickups TBD. Amounts remaining payable in cash to me on pickup.

Detailed version:

We may be getting the Kois early.. and a separate shipment for the Sharks when they come in..

Here are the latest developments:

Insurance - the total of the coins ordered (Sharks + Kois) is above $5000 (which is the maximum that Canada Post will insure). We're close to $6000 total (maybe a bit more.. maybe a bit less). I'd prefer to have our goods fully insured so that nobody is on the hook if the package is lost in transit. So if shipping by Canada Post, we'll need to split the shipments into 2 shipments anyway to have the coins fully insured and get around the $5k max.

Shark Delay - NZ mint has informed us that the Sharks will be 1 month delayed (at least..). Most of us don't mind waiting.. but we have no idea when they'll get the production of these Shark coins sorted out.. Could be awhile..

Max package dimension size - DWS has also let me know that the NZ mint shipped the Kois in 5 separate shipments of 40 coins each. (We have 38 Kois in our Vancouver groupbuy). That box size seems to be the maximum dimensions of that Canada Post will accept. DWS will provide me with the weight and box size. So even if we wait for the sharks, we may need to get the coins shipped in two shipments anyways

Once I get the dimensions and weight of the box containing the 38 Kois..

We'll get a total from Canada Post for the various shipping rates available that include full insurance (of the total amount INCLUDING shipping costs).. and determine the final cost of the Kois. (and an estimate

And then see if we can agree on a shipping method depending on what options are available to determine final cost and how much everyone owes.. so I can wire DWS some more money to get the coins sent here.

Rough estimates:

Weight per koi: (64.5 kilograms) / 190 = 339.473684 grams per koi
Weight of the 190 kois was 64.5 kgs.. So it works out to approx 340 grams per koi..

Weight of package: 340 grams * 38 koi = 12.92 kgs

Rough shipping estimates so we know approximately how much extra shipping will be for each coin ordered:

Regular Parcel (7 business days - with $3100 insurance) - $100
$2.64 extra per coin for shipping

TOTAL: Somewhere around $xx + ~2-3 per koi.

Shark total cost will be similar (102 + 2-3 extra for shipping)..

Additional Notes:

Final totals and amounts owing to be confirmed.

Remaining amounts owing can be paid to me in cash at pickup of the coins.

Coins to be distributed at random due to fairness for COA#s and risk of damage to the packages and coins. I will not go through the coins to find specific COA#s for anyone, so please, no requests. Feel free to advertise and trade amongst yourselves if you do want or have special COA#s to offer or request.

Pickup dates, times, and locations to be determined.

Just an update:

Been working with DWS to get this shipped out west to Vancouver.. however, we ran into a hiccup.

We want to ensure that the package is 100% insured to make sure we're covered if the package is lost in transit.

Canada Post, UPS, FedEx (and most major carriers) will not insure coins or precious metals as explicitly laid out in their terms. So we can't ship and buy insurance with Canada Post, FedEx etc. Most retailers of coins will ship with a carrier and then use 3rd party insurance for coverage.

I did some research and it looks like U-PIC and Shipsurance are the most popular 3rd party insurers that people use and support Canada Post domestic, FedEx, etc shipping methods as well as insure collectible coins / numismatics.

http://www.u-pic.com/
http://www.shipsurance.com/

After running some numbers.. it looks like FedEx for shipping + U-PIC for insurance is the most cost effective method while still being able to fully insure numismatic collectible coins.

Fedex:
FedEx Ground will cost around $40.
U-PIC 3rd party insurance for FedEx will cost about $20.
TOTAL will come to around $60 for shipping + insurance.

Compared to CanadaPost:
Canada Post, Regular Parcel: $40
U-PIC 3rd party insurance for Canada Post: $45
TOTAL: around $85

So any extra that we wired to DWS will be saved and applied towards the Shark shipment when they come in.

Any concerns?.. Should the package be lost.. we'll need to work with DWS for claims with U-PIC etc.. but let's hope that the kois arrive safely.. since we're all really excited for them to arrive!..

Note:

Should the package be lost and should U-PIC deny the claim for whatever reason.. neither DWS or I can be held responsible for reimbursement.

Neither DWS or I can afford to reimburse everyone back out of our pockets.. so we're making extra effort to ensure that this package is fully insured and that we're covered. We've scoured the internet for options and advice.. to make sure we're covered and the package is safe.

If anyone has any feedback, concerns, or recommendations.. Please let us know in this thread so that we can look into any alternate methods of making sure the package is shipped and fully insured.

Can everyone let me know if you're OK with FedEx (FedEx Ground) + U-PIC (3rd party insurance)?

Also, that we're trying our best to ensure the best shipping method + full insurance, but that neither DWS and myself can reimburse everyone if U-PIC denies our claim if the package is lost?

Please reply below.. and let us know if there are better options.

Hoping to get these shipped out as soon as possible.. however, I want to make sure everyone is OK with the chosen shipping method and insurance details.

I inquired specifically about collectible coins with U-PIC.. and here's the response:

Good Morning,

Thank you for contacting the U-PIC support department. We will be more than happy to assist you today.

The coverage for collectible coins is available through U-PIC. The only exception is that we will not insure them to the zip codes you mentioned but as you are sending them from and to a destination within Canada you shouldn’t have any issues. Both Canada Post and FedEx are acceptable methods of shipping for our insurance.

If you have any further questions please feel free to contact us at anytime. We can also be contacted via telephone at (800)-955-4623 or you can chat with us online at www.u-pic.com between the hours of 8:00 am to 5:00 pm PST

Jesse
U-PIC Account Executive
U-PIC Insurance Services

So this confirms that U-PIC Insurance WILL insure collectible coin shipments.

The zipcodes I mentioned are listed in U-PICs terms and conditions.

http://www.u-pic.com/CoverageRules.aspx

U-PIC will not insure coin or jewelry shipments to or from the following zip codes: 10017, 10036, 94102, 94108

I wonder what's up with those 4 zip codes? 2 downtown San Fran and 2 downtown manhattan. Each of those downtown areas have dozens of other zip codes which are fine? Weird. One too many scams from people in those particular areas maybe?

Probably some fishy business was originating from those zipcodes. Insurance fraud, etc..?

Edit: Googling reveals the following:

"Out of the 44,000 plus zip codes in the US, just four are excluded by many third-party insurance carriers: 10017, 10036, 94102, and 94108. And just where are those zip codes? The so called “Diamond Districts” of San Francisco and New York."

Areas with high concentrations of jewellery stores, etc..

Interesting. Must be a lot of fraud. Otherwise they're turning away what's likely a ton of business for nothing.

So how much was the final for shipping? Does that mean we are getting couple bucks less per coin?

I'll work out the calculations. Probably a buck less per coin.

So maybe instead of $81 coin.. it'd be $80 per coin.

Previous shipping was based on a cost of $110 shipping split 38 ways. Getting the final cost.. Insurance was in USD so I've asked DWS for the amounts in CAD as charged to his credit card.

Stay tuned!

Should be around there. Fedex apparently doesn't charge you until its picked up and delivered when you print it online so not sure if the $40 included tax or not (From the looks of it, it did) and Upic was in USD as Switch mentioned, so after my CC does its conversion, we'll see what the final amount is.

Working out the calcs:

DWS provided the following quote:

$45.11 from Fedex
$6.50 + tax charge ($7.35) for FedEx pickup (no fedex in the staples near DWS anymore)
$22.10 for $3500 insurance from U-PIC
$1.50 EMT

48 x 45 x 30cm box. 15kg packaging. $3500 insurance.

So roughly $76 shipping costs.

28 Sharks in the shipment (+ 7 gilded takus + 1 koi ordered by tiggerthetech seperately).

Total of $76 split amongst 36 coins = $2.11 shipping each (less coins in this shipment, and the insurance value is higher)

Final cost of the Sharks was $102 / coin, so $1.00 owing per coin (we originally paid $101 per shark)

For those that paid only $75.00 deposit, $27.00 is owing per coin (102-75 = $27.00)

I'll put everything into a nice table with everyone's quantities and amounts owing.

Will EMT DWS the final amount once we get confirmation from him that everything is OK!
