Hi,

Long story short, I was one of two people to land a 3rd interview in a big global company (after being refereed by an engineer friend who is doing co-op there).
the 3rd interview went very well, after we were done (Me,The department manager,HR manager,VP of the plant) the HR manager said : "If you don't land this job (In department X)
I will make sure to forward it to department Y and help you land a job there, even if you do land a job in department X I will still forward it to department Y because I think they need people like you (Forgot to mention that I was asked to keep it confidential)

My question is...are they just trying to be nice to me and make me feel good in case I do not get a job there?

I doubt it. If they don't want to hire you they won't try to be nice to you....too many people going through those doors to have them be nice to everyone. They're not running a charity here!

Keyword is 'Forward' and 'Help'.

This is no guarantee it will go through. It may get you an interview in that area though giving you a shot. Maybe the hiring manager in those areas may not decide to hire you for there own reasons.

promising you a job is unprofessional imo
either they give you an offer or not
anything else is speculation and I would not consider it

Yes I fully understand that nothing is guaranteed, But my original question was If he just said that to make me feel good if I don't get the job, I guess you cant really know eh =\

Well, you've got his contact, so if you don't get the X job, follow up with him in a couple of weeks and ask him how to get a reference to the Y job. Easy as pie.

Yeah I guess it's my only option, It's just the first time I was interviewed in a huge global company so I was just wondering what they are like...

promising you a job is unprofessional imoNobody promised him a job. HR said that he'll try to hook him up with division Y, which needs folks with skill set. As any blind date, it might work, it might not, but there were no promises made.
It's just the first time I was interviewed in a huge global company so I was just wondering what they are like...Big companies are schizophrenic by their nature. Too many undercurrents, egos, interests. Division manager might have objectives totally different from company's, and this can be going on forever, until the guy retires... You might have a honest glowing assessment from a department A, but it might not help you with department B a bit, or even hurt your chances (if A and B are hostile to each other, which happens a lot more often then most folks realize). Generally, do not put any hope on any signals coming from anyone but a person with final word on hiring/firing you, and it sometime takes a while to figure out who this person is. Maddening, I know :)

As a hiring manager I've seen people that were quite good but weren't the better of the two options. I've handed/mentioned the applicant to other's that are hiring lots of times.

Think about it from the HR person's view - they've done the screen/1st interview. They know what you are so putting you towards another role is easier for them instead of a whole new set of resumes.

Its not a guarantee but it's better than nothing.

Speaking of HR manners. I had an interview recently with an HR rep who does hiring for a group of companies. She noticed that one of my references was someone who had applied for other positions at a few of their other locations. She started chuckling to herself and said "well he must not be very happy where he is, I have SO MANY of his resumes." A couple of minutes later she noticed my last name and wondered why it seemed familiar. I told her the only other person I knew in the field with my last name was my mother back in the day, but she wouldn't have received a resume from her because she's retired. Undetered she opened up her laptop and started doing a search for my last name in some kind of attempt to prove to me that she did have my mother's resume. She was wrong of course and found some other random guy with my last name and started reading off his resume asking if we were related. I didn't. My last name in my culture is very common, if not something people are used to hearing every day, like Smith. I thought this was all pretty unprofessional use of people's confidential information.

Those actions are very serious violations.

Ya. I thought so. And it's not like she was someone who just was handling hiring at the location. This was her dedicated job. Tsk tsk. She should know better.

My wife recently sent a complaint letter to one of the recruitment agencies because she turned down an offer and the person in the agency threatened to discredit her. So yea, it happens.
