A contractor for tree removal told me that the top of a tree cannot heal properly if you cut the top unlike if you cut it from the sides (eg trimming branches)

Is that true?

Might help me decide who to use in case anyone is trying to BS me.

Thanks

I'm not sure whether it harms the tree, but trees that are topped, particularly evergreens, look ridiculous.

Topping is without question a bad idea, for all types of trees, no matter the type.

What are you wanting to do with your tree, and why?

an experienced tree guy.

the top of the tree is dead, hence why I wanted to cut the top off

I can also take it down cuz it's a metre from my house, not sure if the roots would cause problems for the foundation walls of the house

Got a picture of the tree? If the tree top is dead, and it hasn't put out a new leader, then the tree will die within a few years also, in most cases.

I would probably take the whole thing down.
