My old 40" TV is dying. It's a panel problem and it may last months or kick the bucket anytime.
I don't want the TV to die and to be without one until November when the Christmas deals start.
I'm looking for a 55" but I know Futureshop has no HST on 60".
I'm a sucker for aesthetics and thus I really like the Samsung 7000 and 8000 series.
I also sorta like the LG 7000 series and up.
Any suggestions on if there are any good deals out there for this Father's day?
Or should I wait a bit for other sales this summer?
EDIT: I'm looking around the $2000 price range and LED only. My living room is too bright for Plasma.

Sony 55" HX750 is within your budget.
It looks good when it's off, it looks good when it's on.
Are they comparable to Samsung and LG when it comes to pricing? Absolutely not.
Pictures? If you're into "life-like" pictures as opposed to "oversaturated" colours, Sony blows other brands off the water.
Sony is more like the Ferrari of TV industry now that Pioneer Kuro is gone.
Samsung and LG are the Hyundai and KIA.
Reliability and quality? Take my advice and you will thank me later. :)
Got 4 Sony TVs myself, all my family got Sony TVs, all my friends have Sony TVs, and we were all Samsung fanboys/girls several years ago.
Will retail sales associates agree with me? Absolutely not. Why? They make more "spiff" off Samsung and LG and less on Sony. :P

I'm not really a Sony fan. Used to buy their products a lot but they lost my confidence a long time ago.
That said, I don't doubt your point on price and quality and I'll still research it.
Thanks for the suggestion.
Anyone can suggest anything else? Or agree about the Sony?

Saying Sony is Ferrari and Samsung/LG are Kia/Hyundai is a stretch. Sony makes some great TVs and I would say their build quality is a bit better than LG/Samsung, but either brand is fine (as far as quality). Sharp has also been pretty good lately, where I wouldn't have even considered them before.
LED/LCDs are priced considerably higher than Plasmas. You don't get nearly as much for the price. For around 2,000, the Sharp LE640U or Sony NX720 (last year's model, but still good) are what I would recommend. The professional reviews of the Samsung EH6x00 and Sony HX750 have been pretty mediocre.
Panasonic 2012 Plasmas can get very bright and the ST50 is the best value out there, if you decide you change your mind. LCD will always be capable of getting brighter, but for me anyway, the 2012 Pannys can get more than bright enough for a bright room.

I would buy Plasma in a heartbeat if it weren't for Weight & Glare. The cost can't be beat.
My TV sits in a corner that faces the window, so there is a direct glare from the window. Not the ideal spot but that's where it fits best.
Plus I am not sure if my TV stand can handle the weight of a Plasma.
I might be gaming on this machine as well.
I'll consider the ST50 given the great reviews. Thanks for the suggestion. So many choices.
So far I'm considering:
- Samsung ES6500 & ES7000 series (7100 most likely)
- LG LM6700 & 7000 series
- Panasonic ST50 (How does the model naming for Panasonic work? Is VT better than ST?)
- Still not sure about Sony. Have to go in store and take a look.
Anymore suggestions? I'm thinking about upping my range to about $2000 to $2500.
I think I will be getting an Extended Warranty, so I'm hesitant about going to the full $2500 price

Why not the Sharp? At least give it a look.
For Panasonic, it goes (from worst to best) UT, ST, GT, VT.
Again, Samsung LED TVs have been getting mediocre reviews. The Sony NX720 and Sony HX850 are probably the best LCDs under 3,000. If you can push your budget a bit for the HX850, it's arguably better than any offerings from Samsung. I would even put the Sharp LE640U above the Samsungs. LG's low-midrange TVs are pretty average IMO... only their high-end LCDs are good.

Thanks for the info. I'll consider the Sharp and the Sony models you mentioned.
I checked out the Panasonic ST50 and though it's a great deal, I find it a bit grainy looking.
Maybe the higher end models would be better.
As for LG, I saw their 8600?! model and I love it so far but it's out of my price range ($2700).
Getting a bit excited for the new TV now and I am trying to hold myself back.
Trying to decide if I should take it slow and check out models one by one and wait for a sale OR
get the TV now before Thursday when all the Father's day sales are over.
Anyone with any thoughts on when to buy?

If glare is a problem, get a solid shade that rolls up/down (or shutters.)
Something like this here (http://www.homedepot.ca/product/heavy-weight-roller-shade-5525-inx-78-in-white/912468) works well, blocks a GOOD chunk and can 'hide' when not needed. (Also, having shades on your windows, reduces the heat in your house...)

Yes we have blinds and curtains.
But I don't want to have to close the shades and curtains every time I want to watch TV.

If it's a different price range, the models suggested here would not really apply to you.
Though the Panasonic ST50 may be in your range (what is your range???).

At this point, most of the older models have cleared out and the new models have just started going on sale. If you wait later this year or early next year, you should be able to get better pricing on current models and you might be able to pickup a higher-end model that fits in your price range.

From all that I have looked at so far, I like the Panasonic GT50 but not sure how a plasma will do with the glare in my living room.
I also like the Sharp 845 and the Sony HX850. I haven't seen the 720.
Looks like I'm gonna have to up my budget.
So should I risk the Plasma or go Sony or Sharp?

I would give the GT50 a shot. If you looked at the GT50 in a bright store and liked it, it will look fine in your viewing environment.
If you can get your set calibrated, the ST50 offers the same performance. If not, then the THX modes on the GT50 are better picture modes out of the box.
If you go LCD, I would get the HX850 or NX720.

I was reading an article on TorStar (http://www.thestar.com/business/article/1214088--samsung-lg-make-billion-dollar-bets-on-new-wafer-thin-tvs), Samsung & LG will have 55" OLED for $9000 this coming Xmas. The price will be around $1500 by end of 2015, if you can wait ;)

Problem is that the store lighting wasn't bright. No way to tell how the GT50 would stand up.
I haven't been able to find the NX720 in store to view though. Is it better or worse than the HX850?
Does anyone have the Sharp 60le845u? Does the extra colour "quattron" make any difference?

The HX850 seems to be a bit better and is a newer model, but it's also more expensive.

No.

Just FYI, I ended up fixing my old TV with $5 worth of plastic "bumpers".
Hard to take the TV apart and put the bumpers on the Tab ribbons connecting to the LCD and now it works like new!
Still going to get the HX850 though but when it's on sale :)

Having just received my Panasonic ST50 a few days ago I can say that it gets plenty bright. It's in my basement but it has fairly large windows and lets a fair amount of natural light in and I have absolutely no problems. The AR coating does a good job at minimizing reflections and glare.
Light output on TV's is measured in foot lamberts or candelas per square meter and I only have mine at around 40fL with the contrast set to 76 and it's easily enough brightness for my basement during the day. I know these 2012 Pannys can go as high as 55fL (or possibly higher) without sacrificing picture quality and that should be enough brightness for a bright livingroom, unless you like eye searing brightness that LCD offers.

I almost pulled da trigger on a 55" Sammy EH6000, but I jus cldnt justify paying $1299 and having only 2 hdmi ports n almost 4inches thick. Thinkin maybe I should jus get a plasma, dis is gonna b used in my basement.

Do you know what the power usage on a Plasma is versus LED?
What about heat output as well? My Living Room gets pretty warm in summer and I don't have AC.
Still tempted to get a new TV :)

Plasmas use roughly 3x more power. Here in SK it makes minimal difference on my bill.
As for heat output, it seems no different than my LCDs. But technically drawing more power should produce more heat.

I bought mine from a local dealer in Regina but I prefer not to say where. They told me that because they're a smaller business, Panasonic offers their customers extended warranty pretty much as a throw in; dunno if that's the case everywhere else. So I got a 2-year extended warranty and a pair of Panasonic 3D glasses for 2300 taxes included. If you live in the GTA area, Gibby's has it for a good price at 1998.88, and if you live in the west with a Visions location, they should match that and take another 5% off (they'll include shipping though).

so what did you end up getting?
I'm contemplating to get the 7100.......most likely a 46 inch, since the 55 inch is too big for our condo (or so my wife says). The crappy part is the price doesnt seem to drop.
The 46 inch version hasn't budged on price in months at $1999.99
The 55 inch version has often gone on sale from $2499.99 to as low as $2199.99
I love the thinness of the 7 series. Its so overpriced compared to the 6 series, because the rest of the features are practically the same. Im basically going to be spending $700 more for a thinner bezel of the 7 series vs. the 6 series :(........i know its dumb, but it just looks so nice.

The Picture Quality is quite good too though. It's not the best of the best but it is on the higher end.
