View Full Version : Call in drunk driver with no vehicle/location info?

My dad got a call from his friend's wife asking if he knew where he was. He got off work at noon and hasn't been home since. Later on, my dad got a call from his friend saying that he's been at a bar that whole time (it was eight by then) but wouldn't say what bar and claimed he was "never going home" and other things. Obviously very drunk. Eventually hung up on my dad.

A few minutes ago, he got another call from his friend saying that he was driving. He bragged about banging into a motorcycle at a red light (purposely), and raged about the guy "just driving away and not doing anything about it". He was clearly looking to start a fight. He is the kind of person that likes to fight when he's drunk.

Anyway, we don't have any vehicle information because he just got a new car. Nobody is answering at his home anymore (wife or kids) so we can't get the information from them, and we have no idea where he's driving to. But he said he has a FULL TANK OF GAS and again stressed that he wasn't going home.

I want to call this in because, well, I think it's pretty obvious why. But all I know is the guy's name, that he's completely wasted, and is in a car/truck/van in the general GTA area (and where he lives, but he said he isn't going there). If I called this in, would they even be able to do anything about it? Everything I've Googled says to include vehicle and location information and driver information is listed as "if possible".

What should I do? Still call it in? I don't want to take up a 911 spot on the phone if they can't use the information at all.

You don't know what part of the city and you don't know the type of vehicle, even the colour.
Even a missing person's report couldn't be of much help at this point.
I understand you want to help and do the right thing, but unfortunately you don't have much information given to you, so there's not a lot that you can do.

If you can contact the friend's wife again, why don't you put the ball in their court and give them all the information that YOU have and make them make up their mind ... you don't want this turning into YOU being a bad friend (in their mind).

OR, you could always make a call into a police station for advice, see what they say. Maybe you have enough information for them? I have no idea.
But this isn't emergency-related with no information so, you can call the general 416 number for your local station.

Just some ideas.

That's exactly what I was thinking. We're still trying to call his wife or kids back but nobody's answering at the house. My dad has already called his regular bars and his friend hasn't been seen in any of them. He was refusing to tell my dad anything about where he was.

I will try calling into a police station for advice. They'll probably tell me the same thing. (I was pretty sure I didn't really have any options at this point but I thought I would ask)

One thing you can tell the cops that might help gets this idiot off the road is tell them the location of his work. More than likely he would be in that area somewhere initially and they could tell the surrounding precincts to be on the look out (BOLO)

I don't think the cops will do much unless it is a life and death situation. In that case, they can contact the cellphone company and trace his cellphone whereabouts and pinpoint his location.

If you provide the police with a name and/or address they can track down the plate number and circulate it. But by the sound of it, he'll probably be pretty obvious should he cross paths with any cops on the road.

Called the police station and they basically said there wasn't much they could do but thanks for trying and hopefully someone who sees him driving around will call him in.

I guess that's all I can do. Sucks, but it makes sense. I did leave his name and home address with them so they could possibly be doing something, or at least recording that it's been called in (I don't know if they do that?).

sounds like a domestic waiting to happen. Go down to the cop station and tell them your concern. He might get charged and might get off but that doesn't matter. For all you know there is/was violent scrap at the guys place.....do you want that on your conscience?

Finally got a hold of one of the kids. Apparently they were on the phone that whole time with him trying to get him to pull over and find a cab. He eventually hung up on them and they said they're going to call the police now (still no idea where he is).

Thanks for your help everyone. Sounds like nothing has happened at this point so that's a plus.
