my son just drove on QEW when the tire blew off. I was not there when it happened but when I looked at the tire it looks like it was patched (second picture)
it's 2 months old camry. I did not expect a dealer would sell me a car with tire that was repaired. if they did, I am really upset. it could end up in an accident
what would you do?

Check the date stamp on the tire, doubt the patch had anything to do with it. Is the car actually 2 months old, as in a brand new 2012 model?

I don't think it was patched/repaired. Repairs are just for punctures etc on the face of the tire. Any damage to the sidewall is not repairable as far as I know.
The way it failed almost makes it seem like something under the car came loose and then got jammed in the wheel well or suspension or something. Then it puctured the tire and as the car kept rolling it kept cutting until you got a reasonably (all things considered) uniform cut around the sidewall. Really odd.

I think it was punctured and plugged (see the dot in the second pic)
it probably lost pressure but he did not notice it when getting into the car. the damage indicates that he was driving on the rims due to underinflation

1. Tire was driven on when it was flat (from previous repair) and damaged the sidewall/belts
2. Tire was only plugged at previous repair. Plug blew out and tire went flat immediately while the car was still in motion and damaged/cut sidewall
3. Tire was plugged at previous repair and had a slow leak. Almost flat tire driven for a while and damaged/cut sidewall/belts

thanks. it looks like the tire was repaired. I also guessed it had a slow leak and was driven for a while causing the damage to the sidewalls
that pissed me off. how a dealer can do that? it's dangerous

Ah. That makes sense.

looks like there was a puncture from a nail or screw, there should be warranty on the tires with a brand new car
did you notice the tire pressure light come on ?

good point with the light indicator. he says it was OK when he started the car

OP.
If you put on some gloves (for safety), try peering inside to where you see the hole. If there is a patch you should be able to see it.
Also, there is nothing wrong with a patched tire. If patched correctly, it should last for the life of the tire. The only downside to a patched tire is that it should be patched more than twice and a patch should be 15 inches apart or more.
The tire blow out looks like it was driven on while it was flat or very low pressure at high speed. Aka being on the QEW.

Call me crazy, but that tire doesn't look new. It looks well worn. Wouldn't a 2 month old tire still have those little nubby things on it?

If you get a bad puncture, you can lose pressure faster than it takes for the TPMS light to engage. The TPMS isn't checking every second the car is turned on.

I'm glad your son is alright. Incidentally, how old is he? My daughter is 18 and thinks she's the best driver in the world.

he's 17. yeah, I am glad he is OK. it was a rear tire. not as bad as when a front tire blows out but he handled it well considering he was in the left lane
he called CAA and came back home on the spare one. then he took my lexus ...

thanks Scott. it looks like a bad puncture. I had a look inside. there is a hole ca 1mm wide so probably it was not plugged
I've never repaired a tire so I wasn't sure
he probably lost pressure pretty fast

that's how a tire looks like after driving it on rims
my friends wife from north bay once came back home from work with no tires. she lost all of them without even noticing. it was in the winter though with losts of snow on the roads but pretty funny

Looks like the rim is cracked too. Hard to tell in the picture but there looks like a crack on the inside of the rim around the 9 o'clock position.

Why a 2 months old brand new 2012 model have a 2004 Made Tire...??
Is this already a big problem....??
Look like the tire got a bad puncture at that time, pressure lost very fast
& became flat, but you son dont know & keep driving on flat for a long time
until the sidewall finally break down.

Looks like a full-on sidewall blow out. Scary, definitely try to investigate the issue.

OK, looks like he got the puncture on the QEW, then lost air and eventually had the sidewall blow out over the space of a few moments.
Likely not a tire defect, but very glad your son is OK

Tire was manufactured during 9th week of 2012, where are you getting 2004 from?

I've had a tire loose pressure on me just as I was about to go onto a hwy onramp before. This was before TPMS days. It was in my front tire, the steering and braking feel changed drastically on the highway and I immediately pulled over. Big hole from road debris and I could hear the tire still leaking air. By the time I got the spare and jack out, the tire was sitting on the rim.

i am guessing this too
the sidewall looks 'blown-out' because it was driven on with no air in it (this has happened to me too when I drove on a flat for 200 meters)

I will take the tire to the dealer and they will have a look
my wife was driving on the QEW again today and she saw another car with flat tire at the same spot near Sherway Gardens
be careful when you drive in the area. I think there is a construction nearby

my wife told me that she is dealing with some nasty contractor at work. people at work told her that the tire was probably contractor's "work". it looks like someone drilled a hole in the tire
has anyone experienced anything like that?
