So as usual rumours could be true or not, but apparently the Galaxy Note II might have a flexible display/screen:
According to Korean MK Business News, Samsung will ship its follow-up to the Galaxy Note in October, and it will come with a flexible OLED display. Remember YOUM, the flexible technology that Samsung announced earlier this year? That could very well be implemented for the first time in the Galaxy Note II.
If it is true, do you think it will cause up a lot of stir and perhaps lure more Android/Samsung users? Game changing? You be the judge of it. Hopefully there won't be an Apple lawsuit if this does happen.

I fail to see how a flexible screen makes sense in a smartphone. Unless you have flexible casing too. Even then what would be the point? Perhaps more practical on a tablet etc.

Does this prevent the Glass/LCD from breaking when dropped if not than it's just a waste of time.

I disagree. I can see a very valid reason why a flexible screen makes sense on a smartphone. The original Note was intimidating because of its size. Even thought it was the size that made it more functional then a traditional smartphone its size was also its drawback because it made it awkward to pocket. With a flex screen they can start making clam style Notes. Note everyone would have pockets to fit a 5.5" phone... but folded in half it'll be about the size of a 3" phone which is much easier to pocket. Makes a perfect compromise between huge screen while in use and portability.

Without flexible casing and electronics this will not happen.

Why would you need flexible casing or electronics? The phone still needs to be rigid, the only part that needs to be "flexible" is the screen at the point of the fold. Imagine a Nintendo DS... instead of having two separate screens you'd have one continuous large screen when the unit is opened up that's what a flexible screen will allow.

That is goIng to need some serious QC though. So easy to break/damage the screen that way plus hinge mechanisms are prone to breaking/wearing out.
