Sad ending. The dog had actually been locked in a car at the grocery store nearby (Loblaws ? Supercentre ?) Firefighters and police managed to smash the window and free it, but it broke loose and ran away. They had it live on CP24. I went to the RESCU cameras and it appears the dog was hit by a car. He was lying in front of a car on the gardiner.
I think the idiots who leave animals in the car in this weather deserve to be locked in one themselves.

I was watching it go down on CP24 during my lunch break and it was awesome.
I hope that dog doesn't get hit by a car

Why would you post something like that? The dog didn't get hit by a car, it's perfectly fine. Thankfully traffic stopped and the dog was rescued. Can't believe the OP saw this poor dog wandering on a highway and didn't even stop to try to save it.

I hope the owners of the dog are charged. This is happening way too often, people need to start being held accountable for endangering their animals.

Truely sad.. Just imagine the Dog almost dying in the heated Car with oxygen deprivation, and then he gets rescued, only to die later as per above.
I feel sorry for the cops, and the driver who hit it? They must forever live with this thoughts in their mind, placed in an unfortunate situation due to a reckless act by the owner.

Im seeing this more and more, some people keep pets just for show off, and then they do idiotic things like this to put their pets at risk. Just the other day I saw a dog at the back of pick up truck unrestrained, and it was having hard time gripping on flat bed truck while moving.. I tried to honk at the driver only to be showed the finger and speeding off.

I've seen this too. It's usually ****************** who put their dogs in the back of their pickup while on the highway. I have no idea why they would do that. Maybe they think it's amusing? I once saw a German Sheperd in this situation. It looked like he was terrified for his life.

People shouldn't be pet owners if they are not committed to the responsibilities and well-being of the animal

http://www.thestar.com/news/article/1215023--dog-freed-from-car-by-police-escapes-onto-gardiner-expressway

A dog has been rescued from the Gardiner Expressway after police released it from a parked vehicle at a nearby grocery store.

Police were called to the Loblaws parking lot at Jarvis St. and Queen’s Quay at about 12:30 p.m. after reports of a dog in a locked car.

Officers got the doors of the vehicle open, but then spent several minutes trying to coax the animal out of the car.

They eventually slipped a leash around its neck and got it out of the vehicle.

However, the dog slipped out of the leash almost immediately and ran up the Jarvis off-ramp, where police eventually caught it.

Its condition was not immediately known.

The accident temporarily shut down westbound traffic on the Gardiner. Eastbound lanes are currently closed.

Somebody has to. He didn't specify the cops were present to chase down the dog. If I was driving down the highway and saw a dog running free, you bet your ***** I'd stop and try to catch it, if possible. It apparently wasn't possible for the OP to stop as he was in the opposite side, but he didn't say that at first.

On a busy highway? I hope not. You'd end up being a serious danger for both yourself and other motorists, and likely couldn't save the dog either. Leave a job like this to the police.

Definitely report it in though so they are aware of the situation.

Wrongheaded? I can't believe that's actually a word. I don't think I've ever seen or heard that word before.

Anyway, it's not like I would run out in front of moving cars, or stop my car in a live lane. If there was no shoulder, then I would try to pull off on a ramp somewhere and see if I could get to the dog. That's why I used the words "if possible." I know the DVP and Gardiner have areas where it's impossible to stop, so if that's the case, then I wouldn't stop.

I don't get quite understand why saving a dog in the middle of a highway would be the right thing to do when you're putting yourself and other drivers, who happen to be human, at risk.

Do you know what a do-nothing is? It's when someone makes a story up about how his imaginary girlfriend wouldn't call him back after doing the robot repeatedly in public. It's when someone whines about how the interviewer couldn't tell the difference between your and you're then uses it to garner sympathy on an anonymous forum because his ego was too bruised by real world. It's when......actually just read every single one of your posts. You'll get the idea.

I doubt he'd just throw it in park and run towards the dog (sorry forgot his name) trying to save him.

He probably just assumed cars were all stopped anyways and people were just sitting in there watching the dog rather than taking action.

If that dog was in that car for another three hours it likely would have died.

I can't believe this s.h.i.t. happens. If I didn't think the dog would end up spending months in a shelter, I'd say the dog should be taken away and adopted through a rescue organization.

You guys really can't think logically can you? I said if possible, I would stop and try to get the dog. That obviously doesn't mean I would chase the dog into traffic. I know enough never to chase a dog as that would encourage it to run away. I would attempt to get it to come to me, I wouldn't chase it into the road.

I can't believe this even needs clarifying. Nobody in their right mind is going to run into traffic on a highway.

Owner Has Been Charged
http://www.torontosun.com/2012/08/04/owner-charged-in-hot-dog-on-gardiner-case

TORONTO - A Kingston man was charged by Ontario’s animal protection agency with leaving a dog in a hot car on a sweltering day back in June — a situation that led to a failed rescue attempt and the shutdown of the Gardiner.

Later the driver and two others returned to the SUV, only to find a notice left by police.

The man was charged last week. If convicted, he faces a maximum of two years in jail, a $60,000 fine and a potential lifetime ban on owning animals.
